Anyone know the mechanism for location based badges?

Some badges are location based, but some people still get them even if they are not in that location. One example are the Songkran Festival badges (festival in Thailand).

The description for those badges are:
* Record an activity on Songkran Festival, April 13~15, 2019
* Record 2nd activity on Songkran Festival, April 13~15, 2019
* Record 3rd activity on Songkran Festival, April 13~15, 2019

I recorded one activity during that period but didn't got any badge. I live in Sweden. Another person in Sweden got two of those badges for activities performed in Sweden.

What is the mechanism for being rewarded with one of those location based badges and how come some people get them even if they are not in the right location?

Anyone got any ideas?

Today there are three new badges for the Chinese Dragon Boat festival and one got the following criteria: Record an indoor/ outdoor rowing activity on Dragon Boat Festival, June 7, 2019.

An indoor activity doesn't have a location. I did a rowing activity this morning without being awarded with that badge.
I can't see those badges in Garmin Connect so I guess before I see them I can't get them.
Maybe with a Chinese VPN...

I saw user from Taiwan that got two of todays badges so I created an activity in Taiwan and uploaded it to Garmin Connect, but it didn't award me any badge. Maybe it doesn't award badges for uploaded activities... It does for some badges like "100-Mile Ride".

Nothing works on my side... I've connected to Garmin user account, filled my adress like something in Japan / Tokyo. But no badge from golden week or whatever. Editing activities so doesn't change anything as well. Somebody can help ?

  • Did you change the Location field to Japan on this page? There is no address field on that page, so I suspect you were modifying it on an irrelevant page.

  • I'll second that this works. UK user here, have been set to Japan to get the three Golden week badges, and International Workers day, just switched to Germany and now I can see the Rocket Beans badge available to me... Next Sunday I'm going to attempt a Half.

Hm, I do not have any address field there at all, even on the French version. Just the location, where I can only select the country from a dropdown list.

Thanks a LOT ! Finally found the solution. On the link you have three different llocation : one in the upper frame of the profile, one in the adress field, anotehr which is down corner left (location of the website). That was finally in the upper frame. Account. Sorry... I was a bit long to find.

  • It also worked with India and Taiwan. I didn't try any more countries in Asia. No European countries or United States worked. Pretty odd since it is a badge for "International Workers' Day".

  • I just added the country/location requirement to the database for all badges that I know got such a requirement.

I had the Dragon Boat Festival documented for Taiwan but I'm not sure so I just put India as country since that is what is written in this thread. I built support for multiple countries so it is no problem to add Taiwan later on.

    Nice work! Thanks!

  • Really Nice! I noticed the Garmin Connect sorts the limited time badges to the top (of each point scale) of the available badge list and orders them chronologically by whats available next. Any thoughts about implementing that on your site, and even better if you could favour 'limited time' over points, eg some may miss the Rocket Beans badge as it's way down amongst the 4 pointers. I didn't notice that as an idea on your 'Jira/trello' board (That i can't find again)
