Anyone know the mechanism for location based badges?

Some badges are location based, but some people still get them even if they are not in that location. One example are the Songkran Festival badges (festival in Thailand).

The description for those badges are:
* Record an activity on Songkran Festival, April 13~15, 2019
* Record 2nd activity on Songkran Festival, April 13~15, 2019
* Record 3rd activity on Songkran Festival, April 13~15, 2019

I recorded one activity during that period but didn't got any badge. I live in Sweden. Another person in Sweden got two of those badges for activities performed in Sweden.

What is the mechanism for being rewarded with one of those location based badges and how come some people get them even if they are not in the right location?

Anyone got any ideas?

Today there are three new badges for the Chinese Dragon Boat festival and one got the following criteria: Record an indoor/ outdoor rowing activity on Dragon Boat Festival, June 7, 2019.

An indoor activity doesn't have a location. I did a rowing activity this morning without being awarded with that badge.
I can't see those badges in Garmin Connect so I guess before I see them I can't get them.
Maybe with a Chinese VPN...

I saw user from Taiwan that got two of todays badges so I created an activity in Taiwan and uploaded it to Garmin Connect, but it didn't award me any badge. Maybe it doesn't award badges for uploaded activities... It does for some badges like "100-Mile Ride".

  • Normally a region is set automatically at account creation, but as  found - region can be changed manually.

    The easiest way to change region is "Localization" setting here: https://www.garmin.com/account/profile/

    .

    So, as example, to get those badges, you need to set region like this:

    Songkran Festival -> Thailand
    Dragon Boat Festival -> India
    Golden Week -> Japan
    Mid-Autumn Festival -> Taiwan

    And then, rename activities which should get those regional badges. Renamed activities are scanned again for badges, and with correct region you'll get them.

    I changed my location to Taiwan yesterday and have been renaming my Sep 13 2019 run to see if I would get the Mid-Autumn Festival badge but with no luck. Any advice?

    There is probably a Chinese New Year badge coming out Jan 25, I guess one should have location set to Taiwan (China doesn't seem to be an option) before that.

  • That should work. Which device did you use to register that run?

    I got the previous two badges for the Chinese new year without changing country so you shouldn't need to change, but it can't hurt.

  • The badges for Chinese New Year were global, so probably no need to change. Check Available tab few days before Jan 25 and if the badge will be visible there, it will be awarded.

    Badges are for activities recorded on a watch, so be sure it's not manually created. After changing country wait a short while and refresh the page, then rename, and after short while refresh again. Sometimes it takes longer, so you can try again if a badge won't appear.

    Today it works!

    I'm on a Forerunner 245.

    I tried changing the name of the run both in the app and on-line. Maybe it just took a while for the servers to update my location.

    Just a reflection: There are countless holidays in the world, but Garmin seems to avoid the religious ones, which is why there probably isn't e.g. a Christmas badge.

    Thank you for spending the time on figuring things like this out! I'm all for gamification of my work-outs! :)

  • Stop cheating people! WADA will catch you and ban for life! Smiley

  • I changed my location to Thailand because I made an activity those days, and then rename the activity, I did it 2 days ago. No badged for Songkran Festival. Any idea?

  • Songkran festival has been postponed due to the Corona pandemic. No new date known yet. It might be cancelled this year. The future will tell.

  • Morning. Slightly off topic, Have you seen the new badges that have launched today, 5 limited time indoor cycling and treadmill are live for me. Theres also supposed to be Breathwork, walking, strength and Yoga too (Garminfitness insta). Not sure if those are location based or just not launched. There's also the 10K step streak announced.
