Default gear bug

Recently I noticed a bug in assigning default gear to activities. Here goes:
1. I create a new piece of gear and set it as default for running (for example).
2. I do a running activity.
3. After upload to Garmin Connect, when I view the activity, I can see that the piece of gear is assigned to this activity. But when I go to the "Gear" section of Garmin Connect and view the piece of gear, it says that there are 0 (zero) activities and 0 (zero) km for that gear. To remedy this I have to go back to the activity, remove the piece of gear from it, and add it back. After that this activity correctly appears on the gear's activity list, along with correct mileage, and all subsequent activities also properly add this gear.

Not seeing that here, I recently added some cycling shoes as default and they are all up to date, in fact when i added them (several days after i started using them) & put in the date that i'd been using them from GC asked if i would like them added to all rides since that date

Maybe that's the significant difference. For example I do not see the issue when I manually assign gear to activity and then decide to make if default. The only case I see the issue is when a newly created gear is set as default at the moment of creation, and until it is assigned manually for the first time.

i set the shoes as default at the time i created their gear entry

Yes, but you retrospectively assigned them to some past activities, whereas in my case the first assignment came directly after I uploaded an activity to garmin connect.

When i do an activity now it updates in all the respective places without having to do anything like you describe in your OP

I'm not sure I follow. You mean the shoes you refered to in your previous post? Or you created another one?
