Facing the same issue with Forerunner 645 and Edge 530. No solution yet?
Facing same issue using vivosmart 4 and edge 25. The reason I bought these is because I assumed this is something the app could do. No solution yet?
I found a solution of sorts. I am now using the the feature of the fenix to broadcast the heartrate and then pick that up on the edge and just record a single activity on the edge. It does help for previous rodes, but it does for those time I forget to pack my heart rate strap.
You can do this at https://gotoes.org/strava/Combine_GPX_TCX_FIT_Files.php. It allows you to upload multiple fit files and then select how to merge. For instance heart rate readings from watch, combined with power, cadence, speed, GPS from Edge unit.
I don't think you will get any changes to how this works. If you use multiple devices you will get multiple activities. Starting to merge activities is not an easy task and there are lots of potential issues that can occur. I don't believe that the heart rate data logged without an active activity is enough detailed to be used. There are a lot easier ways to fix this.
The heart rate can be broadcasted from the wrist watch to the Edge or use a chest HRM strap with the Edge. Or use the wrist watch as your main device and log everything with it and use the Edge just for navigation and viewing the data from the sensors and discard the activity on the Edge after the ride.
Heart rate from my 735xt to my Edge is all I was looking for. I found instruction here (Can Edge 130 get heartrate from a Garmin watch? - Edge 130 - Cycling - Garmin Forums) . Thanks for the clarification.
