Question on new privacy policy

I can't find where else to ask this. If there is a better place on the forums, please move it there and let me know. I just saw the new privacy policy for Garmin. One thing it notes is that the minimum age is supposed to be 16. I thought it was 13? My daughter has been using a FR 15, and now and FR 235 for the past 8 months or so. She's 14. So what will happen when this new policy goes into effect? Will she lose all her history? Is there a way we can save it so she can reload it when she turns 16?

In a related question, is there a reason these changes are being made? I noticed Strava is also raising the age of use, and also starts on May 25th. Are there new laws or something coming into effect? My daughter is asking me why this has happened, so I want to be able to explain to her. Meanwhile I'll have to see if we can find another way to save her information when she runs.
  • Regarding the history:

You can download each recorded activity as an individual file:
    • In a web browser, log in to Garmin Connect and open the activity.
    • Click the little cog icon in the upper right corner (tool tip: "More...").
    • Select "Export Original" in the menu which appears.
You will now get a copy of the original .fit file from the watch.

Garmin has not made it possible to batch download activities, so it can be quite time consuming to download 8 months of activities this way.

Someone made a script which you can run in your browser (at least a Google Chrome browser). It is a bit clumsy to use, but it works - until Garmin decides that it shouldn't...

    Instructions:
    • In Google Chrome, log in to Garmin Connect and open the first activity in the history.
    • Press F12
    • A window with a lot of text will now appear.
    • At the buttom of this window, at the ">" sign, paste the code below and press Enter.
    • You will now download up to 100 activities from the account.
If 100 activities is not enough, change "ttl = 100" in the code to a higher value, before you press Enter.

Here is the code. It is not written by me, but I have modified it a bit to get the original file instead of a .tcx, and to work forward through the activities instead of moving backward:

EDIT: No, I can't post the code here. My post can't be saved when the code is in it. So if you want it, send me a PM.
  • Probably be able to use https://tapiriik.com to transfer your data to a Dropbox folder. If you do have your data copied to Strava, then there's an option to download it all in there.

And of course, there's no reason any underage person couldn't continue to use these devices - just set up a new account and be less than truthful about age.
  • So just an update. Strava just sent my daughter a message saying that they won't be saving health related data (e.g. heart rate) but will continue saving her runs. She's still at an age where she doesn't care so much about heart rate, so this works for us. It'll still be clunky as we'll have to take files from the watch and transfer them to Strava manually if Garmin won't let her use her existing account until she's 16. But we'll take what we can get. :-) Hopefully Garmin will be able to have some type of compromise solution as well, we'll wait and see.
