Cannot export activity

Former Member
Former Member
The last two activities I did didn't sync to Strava.

Following the Garmin documentation, I try to go to the Activities page, and use the 'Gear' icon to download a tcx/gpx file for the activities so I can upload to strava manually.

But, there is no Gear icon, nor any other way I can see to download the gpx data from the activity on the web page any more.

Why has this function been removed? Is this an "improvement" in the "modern" Connect site? Is there now some other way to do what I need to do?

Thanks

  • Following the Garmin documentation,

Where? Link to specific piece or page of documentation please.

Wrong place to look for the cogwheel (or ‘gear’) icon. What we'd want to establish, though, is whether it is error on the part of Garmin's documentation, or your error in misreading or misinterpreting what was written.

Strava's help page for the task quite clearly states how to do it, and the steps as described are still correct even after the significant refresh in Garmin Connect online's design as of version 4.2 (if I recall correctly) and the screenshots are out of date.

Why has this function been removed?

It hasn't been removed. It's still there when I checked just now (in the Safari browser running on my Mac, and with the Garmin Connect version being reported as 4.3.0.9 in the page footer).

    https://support.garmin.com/faqSearch/en-GB/faq/content/W1TvTPW8JZ6LfJSfK512Q8

Sign in to your Garmin Connect account
Click Arrow Icon in the upper left corner to expand the Navigation Bar (if it not already expanded)
    Click Activities
Click All Activities (Steps for Wellness Data)
Select the Activity you would like to export
Click the (Gear) in the top right corner
Select the format you would like*
    Save the file

When I click on my activies/all activies and select an activity I get no gear.

I have the same version of Garmin Connect web page as you mention. Browser is Firefox.

  • Did you follow the links I posted and read those discussion threads? There isn't any more that needed to be added or repeated here.
  • Don't just select it from the list. Open the activity.

Wow okay. Yes I did. Guess that's that then, thanks for the help
  • You arent crazy - it doesnt work for me either - using a PC maybe thats the difference. There does not appear anyway to "open the activity" either.

For me the issue is really annoying in that i simply want to export an activity from one garmin account and import into another - that doesnt work either! and yes i have tried changing the date and distance formats etc. really basic stuff not working here.

It worked for me just now using Firefox 58.0.2 (64-bit) on my Mac running OS X 10.11.

It worked for me just now using Chrome 63.0.3239.132 (64-bit) and Internet Explorer 11.125.16299.0 on my PC running Windows 10.

The text of the activity name (Tyneside Running) in harpingon's example) is a clickable link. Click it and the activity page, with map, summary and graphs, will open, and the cogwheel is at top right under the device sync and profile icons. Just selecting the line isn't enough, and that Garmin FAQ is, hm, ambiguous to my mind.

I've been around in this forum for quite a while now, and I don't recall seeing anyone complain about ambiguity in that instruction or being unable to figure it out, before the Garmin Connect online UI was tweaked some time last year. The Activities page used to look like this:
    [IMG2=JSON]{"data-align":"none","data-size":"full","src":"https:\/\/goo.gl\/JnNgs8"}[/IMG2]

so I must conclude that what selecting the activity meant was apparently clear, at the time that the documentation at:
    https://support.garmin.com/faqSearch...JZ6LfJSfK512Q8
    and:
Strava's help page for the task
cited above was written, even though one or more activities could be selected on the list itself without opening a particular activity.

In redesigning the UI of the Activities page in Garmin Connect version 4.20, Garmin unwisely eliminated the affordance from what used to stand out as a clickable link to a particular activity in the list, by making the visual clue appear only when the mouse pointer is hovering above its title.
