Sleep tracking is a weak point.

Coming from other devices such as Samsung Gear S2, I'm impressed with virtually every feature save one. Sleep tracking.

so far in one week it's got my times wrong twice and failed to track one day. It looks like Garmin sample HR regularly on the VA3 but it seems that only accelerometer data is used to analyse sleep.

that's seems pretty absurd, in that using both (as Sleep as Android does) would offer far more accurate metrics.

is there a good reason for this anomaly?
  • Probably because sleep tracking is calculated in web connect and web connect supports pretty much all of Garmin's devices including many devices that don't track 24/7 HR like my VA. They could have multiple sleep tracking algorithms depending on the device but so far it seems they don't.
  • According to my Fenix 3HR i sleep absurd long hours :)
Garmin thinks i am a very well rested guy!

I would love to have good sleep data but the data from my Fenix is just absurdly wrong.
And not some day's wrong, some days correct but alway's way to much sleep hours.
  • When I first started with Garmin tracking years ago, I had to manually start and stop sleep mode to get sleep data. Since it became automatic, perhaps because I was used to a manual system, I just use the graphs as an indicator of when I slept. Then I just have to tweak the results. For example, today, I removed about 2 minutes that were included in sleep time when I first got up.

Usually, it's more but I feel like I get a good approximation of what went on while I was unconscious. I don't expect the results to be gospel.

Agreed!!! Sleep tracking is really very very poor with Garmin!
I so want to get the VA3 but I am addict to my sleep stages on my 'other' device that includes rem sleep!
Why can't Garmin provide sleep statistics that are just as good as the competition!!! And I know it works well on the competition!
Come on Garmin.... get the programmers on this asap!
    Please?!

According to my va3 I get up 2 or 3 times a night to pee (after a well-hydrated ride of course). It's too accurate. :)
  • gonzlobo,
Same for me except for the "well-hydrated" part. LOL.

I like to have good sleep information.

  • Coming from Band 2 where sleep tracking was manual if you wanted to calculate rest quality, Garmin is better, however, it's overestimating my sleep by failing to stop counting well after I'm up and moving around. At least I can set the range manually to when I know my alarm went off.

The sleep tracking is poor to put it mildly. I use another app called Sleep as Android which is much better but I really don't understand why Garmin can't do better. They're falling further an further behind frankly.

Are you using SaA on the watch as well? How is it behaving?
