activities uploading with incorrect time

I am experiencing a problem whereby when I record an activity and then upload it to Garmin Connect, it shows the time the activity was started incorrectly. The time shows correctly on the device itself.

I have reviewed other posts to see if there is a fix for this but cannot find anything. I have checked the setting in Garmin Connect for 'upload timezone' and set this to try and correct the problem but it has no effect.

I am in the UK, using a Fenix 3 HR. Today for example I did a walk. Started at 06:39. The start time shows correctly on the Fexix3. When uploaded to Garmin Connect, it shows the start time as 05:39.

I've also noticed that the 'upload timezone' setting seems to change itself back to GMT periodically and in any case the help icon for it shows the following which makes me think it won't do anything for a GPS activity anyway:

'This setting will only apply for new non-GPS uploads and does not change the time of activities already stored at Garmin Connect.'

any advice on how I can resolve this please?
  • OK so I had a few mins to explore this further and have discovered that the setting in Garmin connect for timezone is overridden by whatever is set on my phone.

I use an iPhone 6, date and time setting is set to auto which picks up the time zone is London. This is correct. When I sync from the mobile app, it changes whatever I set the time zone upload thing to back to GMT (London). I changed the setting on the phone to manual and for the hell of it pretended I was in Mexico. Sure enough, when I sync from the mobile app, it changes the setting to Mexico.

So I conclude from this that the timezone setting is correct, however, Garmin Connect is not taking into account Daylight Savings Time. Although I'm in UK (London timezone), we are on British Summertime which is GMT +1.

Any ideas on what I can do to sort this out, it's very irritating seeing ll my activities recorded at the wrong time when the device is recording them correctly.

to get round the issue where the phone setting for time zone overrides the time zone setting in Connect, I unpaired my phone from the Fenix3. The Fenix 3 can sync over wifi. I set the timezone setting in Connect to GMT+1. I then went for a walk and uploaded the recorded activity. The activity still shows the wrong time (still 1 hour out) but now the timezone setting in Connect does not change as it did when syncing through my phone.

my activities get shared with a couple of other sites (e.g. MyFitnessPal) and the activity start time is shown correctly on these sites

I can't be the only person having this problem surely?
  • I have made some progress with this issue. I have now established that when I complete an activity that starts and finishes away from home, the activity is uploaded to both Garmin Connect website and the Garmin Connect mobile app with the correct start time. If the activity starts/finishes at home, the start time is shown on both the website and mobile app incorrectly (always 1 hour out). If I hover over the time on the website to show the timezone, for those with the incorrect time it shows GMT, for those where the start time shows correctly, it shows Western European Time (WET). I have tried two different activity types and the results are consistent across both types.

What I can't figure out is what is happening differently for activities that start/finish at home. My initial thinking was that it was something to do with my home wifi. To eliminate this I removed the config for wifi from my Fenix3 and turned wifi off on my phone. I recorded an activity with start and finish at home and the start time shows in app and website incorrectly. It's obviously not the wifi. Some of the activities that have been recorded away from home are only approx 5 miles or so away so I can't imagine are using a different set of satellites? The other thing that is puzzling me is why activities showing as GMT would be any different to those showing as WET. The two zones are the same, in fact on the Garmin Connect settings dropdown WET shows as "(GMT) Western European Time".

All of the activities show the correct start time when displayed on the watch itself.

Can anyone suggest what could be the cause of this please and/or suggest what I can try to resolve it. Is anyone else having similar issues? It is driving me crazy.

I'll be happy to share activities, GPX files or whatever if anyone has more expertise in this area than I do that may be able to help resolve this.
  • Exactly the same issue!

    Hi

I have exactly the same problem! The trip from home to work is being logged with the correct start time, but when I go home, it sets departure time an hour early. The device (Edge Explore 1000) itself has the right time, and also the sync to Strava. I don't think it's always been been like this, if I check trips for early March, they all seem fine.

It's bugging the h*ll out of me as well, so any input on this would be appreciated. :)

FitRak, post a link to the activity

When i open the activities folder in my Garmin memory, the device shown the ride session save is wrongly recording the file name. Example:- Filename: 2018-01-07-04-44-03. Date modified: 9/1/2018 7:07 PM. For your info my garmin software version is 14.04

So the no 04-44.03 is indicate the time of the ride start and Date Modified is indicate the finish time. So i've checked my ride is actually start around 6:++PM and finish at 7:07 PM.

This means the file name incorrectly recorded the file name start time but the finish time is correct.

I am very sure the error coming from the Garmin software itself. The file name indicate the information is wrongly wrote. When i refer to the file properties it shows the file created time is 9th Jan 2018, 6.08 PM and Modified at 9th Jan 2018, 7.07 PM. But the file name is 2018-01-07 (date), 04-44-03 ( start time).
