How to export all data from Garmin Connect?

What is the easiest way to export all activity data in csv format from Garmin Connect? When I go to the Activities page, it does not seem to show any activity there even though I have been syncing my vivosmart HR to my phone (mobile app) for 2 months regularly. On GC, if I go to Steps, I can see some steps activity but dont see a way to export it.

Thanks.

Did you record any ">‑HR">timed/fitness activities with your vívosmart‑HR? They are what the page is meant to show.

I did two and they show, but I want to see all the steps, hr, stairs climbed info. How do I export that?

  • I don't know. I never had the need or desire to export the 24x7 activity tracking data from Garmin Connect, and so I haven't looked into it or tried. If I just wanted information, I'd look at the reports that Garmin Connect online can produce, without trying to suck the data out for post-processing in a different tool.

The point for what I want is to be able to use Vivosmart HR as a health tracker to be able to monitor my own data for extended periods. I dont know if Garmin provide any APIs for this.

I note that you've amended your post above to now say “my own data”, instead of something to do with “multiple people for a study”. Getting permission and clearing privacy-related issues for accessing some other user's data is a whole another can of worms.

Yes, I realized that. First I am looking to find insights in my own data before going bigger scale :)

Is there really no API to get my own data off the garmin servers? Seems like a violation of privacy. I emailed them about the Wellness API and they said it is not available for consumers. I think a legal consultation maybe required.
  • Go right ahead, let us know how you get on with that.

Knock yourself out with the FIT files.

You're the one voluntarily submitting the data, for Garmin to produce reports (in one or more formats that the company has the ultimate authority to decide whether to offer) and present them back to you – and, in some instances, other users based on privacy settings you nominated – in Garmin Connect.

There is no reason why it is obliged to offer the data for you to retrieve in CSV (or any other particular data interchange format) files specifically, or offer you free access to an API. Your preferences in terms of access method and format have no standing or relevance as far as privacy goes.

Furthermore, there is an API – but you need to request and be granted a licence to use it, and Garmin charges a $5,000 fee for the licence if it approves your request.

Yes, please go right ahead and pursue that at your own cost.

Wanting something does not automatically create obligation for someone else to give it to you – certainly not on your preferred terms (including, but not limited to, free of charge or with a cherry on top).

I realize these posts are a bit old but a service mentioned in several places elsewhere in these forms called FitnessSyncer https://www.fitnesssyncer.com/ which has paid for the API and enables free download of all of your Garmin Connect 'Wellness' data. Its a little hard to discover how to set this up, but you create a FitnessSyncer account, and the set Garmin Connect (Wellness) as a data source (you do this as an Activity). Once this is established, FitnessSyncer will pull in data from GC and provide you with more detailed charts than on GC. You can downloads most of this data, like detailed daily heart rates or create custom summary downloads by creating a CSV "Destination" like to Google Drive and other destinations. (I had trouble getting this to work)

However the cool trick is that once Garmin Connect is established as a source, you can edit that source and you will see an icon on the upper left of the edit page that looks like a sheet... clicking on this will download ALL of your Garmin data in to a CSV worksheet! (something that Garmin should have enabled in the first place).

By creating a FitnessSyncer Pro account you can go back further into GC history. Its a VERY helpful service!
