Why the difference - which should I believe?
I would believe both. Reading the two descriptions, both are telling you this was a hard, demanding workout. One is simply cautioning you to be sure you recover fully and to only do this type of workout on an occasional basis.
The two aren't mutually exclusive. Overreaching can lead to significant improvement, provided you don't hurt yourself in the process and set your training back instead.
