Step count & stride length

Why do walking activities in connect not show step count. If it were it would seem an easy way to calculate average stride length.
  • It does, but for some reason known only to Garmin, you have to add the Steps columns in the activity window. I'm assuming you mean Web Connect, since this sub forum is about that interface.
  • True but the steps shown in the report is a calculated figure based on the division of distance by the assumed stride length. There have been many times when the steps associated with an activity were more than what I had in total for the day at that point.
  • Are you sure it does that though? I went snowshoeing today and although I didn't checked as I stopped the activity but as I left the lake (had about 100 more feet to do before reaching the cottage), I was at 5080 something steps and when I check in Activities, it displays 5116. I would assume my stride length while snowshoeing isn't exactly the same as a walk stride length (although I used the Walk activity when snowshoeing) and after 5000+ steps, it would show some visible discrepancies but it doesn't.

I guess it depends on whether the activity was recorded in such a way that the step count was in the FIT file uploaded to Garmin Connect. There is no Walk activity profile on my FR235, but if I record a walk with the Run activity profile, upload the completed activity, and then change the activity type to walking in Garmin Connect online, I can still see the average stride length (including for individual splits).

May be it depends on the device because I just went for a small walk and my VivoActive HR tracker recorded 3452 steps as I stopped the activity and it shows the exact same amount in the activities in Connect
  • I keep the step count field visible on my activity screen. During the activity, the step count shown in the activity field is perfectly in-line with what the watch says on the steps screen. Then I sync, and the number of steps shown can be different by as much as 1,000 compared to what I saw during the activity. Then there's the aspect of having more steps in the activity than my grand total for the day if I do an activity first thing in the morning.

At least, that's what happens with my VA. If I do the math, the stride length calculated by distance divided by the number of steps shown in the report is pretty much the same.
  • Odd because I'm not seeing this. The steps while in the activity matches what Web Connect shows once I stop the activity and sync.
  • I suppose it might be different depending on the device. Mine is a Vivoactive.
  • Considering that the VAHR can be updated by other devices with trueup and the VA can't, perhaps the VAHR can save the activity steps and the VA can't. After all the VAHR's design is almost 2 years newer than the VA and it's much more powerful.
