As already written previously, you can simply download all activity fit files from the watch in a single operation. Just connect to the watch with the USB cable, and copy the files from the activities folder. Is that not good enough?
How do I access the "activities folder"? I tried Garmin Express but it did not work.
Try File Exporer (if on Windows), or any other file manager able to access external USB storages
Depends on what you want to use it for. In many cases you do not need to convert it - plenty of services and applications can work with FIT files directly, so if your app does not accept FIT files, you can try finding an alternative one. You can also export the activites in the GPX or TCX format drirectly from Garmin Connect idividually or using a bulk script (as recommended in the other thread you posted to). Or you can google up a FIT / GPX converter
