Unable to import Fitbit data -- An error occurred with your upload. Please try again.

As the title says, I am unable to import any kind of Fitbit data.

I have tried various combinations of export settings on the Fitbit side -- from only weight to everything (activities, food, sleep, etc.) and .csv to .xls.

Nothing works.
  • I tried importing my Fitbit Body data for the first time today and ran into the same problems. After 30min of reading this forum and troubleshooting, the solution is really this :

    1. In Fitbit site, EXPORT as XLS. (not CSV)
    2. When importing, Garmin Connect will ask you about the various data formats.
    3. I checked my Excel file and date was in this format 31/12/2017, and simply selected the same format 31/12/2017 in the Garmin Connect dialog window.
    4. My data uploaded correctly.

Take note that Fitbit won't allow you to export more than 3 months of data (and I have nearly 4 years worth!)

Tried this and can verify that this method worked for me interestingly enough. How to deal with Fitbit's limit of being able to export 31 days at a time and then copy/pasting in 3 month increments to Garmin...

I got all my 2017 activities imported today from Fitbit files. Exported just Activities as XLS and then without even opening them browsed to and selected file via Garmin import.

Key is to match up the date format when Garmin shows you the options. It defaults to 31-12-2018 format but the file has 2018-12-31 format.

Have all my steps for 2017 now imported into Connect.
  • I just struggled for a few hours getting my historical weight information in to Garmin Connect, but just had a breakthrough that worked for me...and I figured I'd share for others for two reasons...

    (1) my historical weight data was coming from a Nokia Withings scale and NOT from Fitbit
    (2) even when I followed the steps in post #33, it wasn't quite working

For my ongoing weight data, I am syncing my Withings Weight to MyFitnessPal to Garmin Connect. I LOVE my new Slate VivoActive3 with an aftermarket black steel band and really wanted all my data in one place. Unfortunately, Connect doesn't sync directly with the Withings! But Withings + MFP calories + Garmin fitness mostly works for me.

My process to accomplish this was

    1. Follow the steps in post #33 above to download a few records of data from an old Fitbit account. I actually used my wife's data. I'll attach a mostly empty file to this post other can use...

    2. Download my entire Withings weight history from https://account.health.nokia.com/export/account_login?b=my_data (or any other weight source you have I guess)

2a. First thing I did to my data file was to look for duplicate dates (where I had two weigh-ins for some reason) and delete any 2nd (or subsequent) weights for any given day. I don't know if this is necessary or not, but it was one of the steps I took along the way to clean my raw data as I kept getting import failures.

    3. Open the Fitfit file in Excel and paste in your date and weight columns into excel Cols A and B below the dummy / old data

    4. It appears that Garmin Connect prefers dates and numbers in 'text' format (even in Excel) and that's the way the Fitbit data file is formatted.

4a. However, when you paste in your own data from Withings or another source, you will notice that it is NOT in text format since Excel prefers to format #s as #s and dates as dates. In my case, my Fitbit file had the data left justified, but my own data when pasted in was right justifed in a number/date format. Accordingly, I needed to transform my data into these formats and create blank data for any missing data (for me, I didn't have or want to load BMI or Fat data and they were in the file by default so I just put in 0s.

4b. Off to the right of your data, put the equation =TEXT(_Your_date_reference_cell,"yyyy-mm-dd") and copy it down the length of your entire data set. This will convert the date field into a properly formatted date as text.

4b. Off to the right of your Weight, BMI, and Fat columns, put the equation =TEXT(_Your_weight_reference_cell,"0.00") and copy it across 3 columns and down the length of your entire data set. This will convert the weight, BMI, and Fat fields into a properly formatted data as text.

4c. Copy these columns from your new equations and past them as "Paste-Special_as-values' underneath your old raw data

4d. If you didn't have BMI and Fat data like me, make sure you have 0.00 showing in the entire columns for those two fields. This was the last thing I corrected before my import actually worked. I had left them as blank rather than putting in 0s. Once I made this correction the import process completed successfully and my weight data showed up almost instantly in my weight graphs.

4e. Don't forget to delete your old raw data at the top and any of the helper equations you used to transform the dates and data formats. Only thing remaining in your file should be four columns in A, B, C, D. Headers in row 1. and your transformed data going down as many rows deep as needed.

After doing the above (and 15-20 intermediate tries to get this working), the import process finally completed successfully.

Since I still had some issues even after trying post #33 above (many thanks to superflask), I thought I would elaborate on my subsequent steps that ended in success!

Happy to help if anyone else has issues with my approach and example file.

Thanks for posting this. I have the same problem, trying to import Withings scale data into Garmin Connect. I followed your steps and still got that error. I even tried deleting everything from your sample file other than the data fields and still couldnt get it to load. Could you upload a file that imports as-is just so I can see it work?

  • same problem here :-/
    this doesnt import
  • eventually made it work, problem was on formatting. Thanks a lot !
  • Has anyone managed / succeeded to import "steps" info from Nokia/Withings -> GC?
It seems to be possible using same process, but we'd need a typical fitbit step file to start with

Thanks to the description i even made the import of 5 years worth of historical weight data that i had saved in an iphone app (which luckily had the possibility of an csv export). i more or less followed the steps detailed above and made it work. if you have too much data, split it up into two chunks... this and a slightly different decimal format (i am living in europe) made it work. kudos and thanks a million!
  • Resurrecting an old thread –

I'm trying to import steps and distance into Garmin Connect. I'm able to get the csv file uploaded to Garmin successfully, but the data still shows as "0" for the dates I've tried to import.

Has anyone found a permanent fix to this issue? Thanks.
