Unable to upload any fit/tcx files to Garmin Connect

Former Member
Former Member
As of yesterday, I am unable to import any activities into Garmin Connect.

I've tried multiple browsers, I've tried altered fit files imported as fit and tcx, I've tried un-altered fit files (exported directly from Garmin Connect, then imported directly back in), etc. but still getting the error "An error occurred with your upload. Please try again."

Is anyone else seeing this? I can't imagine that this is only an issue for me...

Thanks in advance.

    The error is: https://connect.garmin.com/proxy/upload-service-1.1/json/upload/.fit 401 ()

HTTP Status 401 - Invalid signature for signature method HMAC-SHA1

Status report: Invalid signature for signature method HMAC-SHA1
    This request requires HTTP authentication

You can pass this along to the devs, GFM1011.
  • Hi,

Same problem for me via multiple browsers and multiple formats (tcx, gpx & fit) : Can not upload files from my computer or directly from a fenix 3 !
  • Ditto. Yesterday the uploads elapsed and moving averages switched back on my Garmin 500 having been shown in reverse for a few weeks. So looks like they tweaked something yesterday.

The development team is looking at this issue when clicking the import button. There is another way to manually upload files to Garmin Connect. This FAQ link provides information and instructions:

    https://support.garmin.com/faqSearch/en-US/faq/content/Ht3ZP52Kju075uKvqTqu99

I have not been able to reproduce the issue using those steps. If you are still seeing errors when using the steps from the FAQ, please reply back to this thread.

We were seeing the same Status 401 message, and we did pass that along to the team as well. We appreciate the information.

Thank you for this information GFM1011. I was able to upload my run manually.

    Workaround allowed upload...missing information

The workaround that you suggested did work as far as the upload. But the only information provided when I went into the data was the mileage. Everything else was missing.

I have no Garmin Express in my PC and most likely I will never have it, because I don't want Garmin to decide when to update my Edge 810 firmware.

So far uploading *.fit files from USB connected Edge 810 to Garmin Connect has been possible by manual means: Clicking the menu icon (three horizontal bars) on top left corner of GC, Selecting "Activities" -> "Import".

Now uploading a *.fit file fails:

The Garmin Connect team has resolved the issue that was causing an error when using the Import button from the Garmin Connect Activities list. I have been able to test and successfully upload activities this way.

Users should now be able to upload using the Import button or the steps in the FAQ discussed previously:

If there is data missing, there could potentially be corruption in the FIT file. If you still have the file on your device you may try deleting it from the account and uploading it again.

You can find more information and discussion about corrupt files in this thread: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?29924-How-to-repair-a-fit-file
