Garmin Connect Calorie Calculation

Former Member
Former Member
I have a Garmin 800 uploading events to Garmin Connect and then syncing to my fitness pal. My question is how does Garmin Connect calculate the calories burnt in the process. Is the figure calculated the entire exercise or the additional burnt from normal day to day living.

For instance if I cycled for an hour and Garmin Connect calculated the calories to be 600. Sitting in the arm chair doing nothing I would have probably burnt about 100 calories. So when I calculate the additional food I can take on board is it 600 or 500?

I hope this makes sense.
  • Garmin Connect does not do calorie estimates. It just shows whatever your Edge 800 tells it, which is an estimate based on heart rate data (at best, if you don't have HR, it's even worse). All it does is estimate "active calories". If you go down a long descent and your heart rate drops low enough, you'll notice that your 800 will stop adding calories.

If your worried about your weight, watch your scale. The numbers the 800 gives are only (poor) estimates. Weight can easily be measured, calorie burn cannot. (Do a Google search for "Fitbit fat".)

Hi Thanks for the reply very informative.

I get the bit about watching the scales of which I'm doing. 10b loss so far. Just don't want to mess it up. Also I know it's not that accurate but do you know if the calorie count (Active Calories) includes the calories I would have used doing nothing (BMR) or just additional?
