Connect not picking up Segments

Former Member

Hi
I am very disappointed that Garmin is not putting more effort into restoring the Segment feature in Garmin Connect. It has now been two weeks since the error was recognised by Garmin and the Garmin Connect Status page still simply reads:

"DOWN Segments
We are currently experiencing issue (sic) in processing your segment matches. We are actively investigating."
https://connect.garmin.com/en-US/status

It is really annoying as it was the main reason I bought an expensive Edge device. It is now much harder to compare my progress while I am training plus I do not want to be pushed into paying for an expensive Strava Premium upgrade just because Garmin can't be bothered to fix something that was supposed to be free.

Anyone else fed up?
  • Well, I bought my Garmin several years before Modern and segments, so this is not a deal breaker for me. But that being said, it is fustrating to have this down for so long and not a peep out of Garmin about when or even if we can expect this to be fixed.

I'm pretty sure that they don't regularly monitor these forums. I sent a request for info off a few days ago and got the standard 'we are looking into it and hopeful it will be back up soon' reply.

It's pretty pathetic from such a large company. The least they could do is provide a direct update to users (here, or better yet a mass email to registered users) giving an estimated repair date.

So disappointed I spent close to $300 on a speedometer that doesn't do much more than my phone. I won't be doing it again!!

It also occurred to me that they might be abandoning us to Strava segments!!! All was ok until links to Strava started appearing on Connect.

I think you are right.

Its what I think too, its not coincidence, looks like bussines plan from Garmin. Hopefully Garmin will not ignore our dissatisfaction and will do something about it. I am pretty sure, they don`t need to worry, most people, who have been already using segments will stay with strava anyway.

  • Ah, so this thread is where all the complaining about the (virtual) removal of Garmin segments hangs out! Wondered why no-one, other than me, seemed bothered about it in the Edge 1000 forum!

Anyway, yes, Garmin's treatment of its users here - with respect to one of the 1000's main selling points - is, once again, risible. That said, I personally wouldn't have an issue using Strava segments if it became possible to embed them in planned courses. As it is, since I always follow a course, I can't use them.

    Disappointed

I also use courses on my rides, actually to take me from A to B or back to A, via segments.

I'm really disappointed that Garmin support isn't clear about its intentions or plans towards Garmin Segments. The fact that they haven't figured out a way to incorporate segment functionality (Strava or Garmin), during courses is even worse.

    Bah.

    Buy Strava

Ha, yes, I agree, I was thinking the exact same thing. In fact I hope the delay is because they are negotiating it now.
    Please, Garmin.

Get your plattform stable or fire the whole dev-team and buy strava.
I'm fed up of buying devices connected to a platform with only 95% uptime.
  • Everyone would win

I do think that Garmin should buy Strava. Strava is about the only remaining fitness tracking/app that remains independent and/or has deep ties and it would be a good match with their dominant cycling presence. Garmin's attention and development of Connect has been half-hearted, at best. Having non-functional segments for many, many months, along with other significant failures isn't just disappointing to users, it damages the brand. And with the wearables market accelerating and brutally competitive, it is going to hurt eventually. They do seem to have put a great deal of effort into the GCM UI and UX, which is essential for a successful wearable of any kind. And, IMO, has been a good effort.

Owning and fully integrating Strava would further strengthen their ownership of the cycling market and make the premium end of cycling almost impossible to penetrate. I have had many Edge series head units and I decided to go all-in with the Fenix 3 as my primary multisport device, including cycling. The only time I mount my Edge is when I need mapped routing. Now if they'd just make the Varia heads-up a Fenix 3 compatible accessory, I'll be in performance metrics heaven! But I digress.

The overall suck rating for Connect is so high, anyone who cycles just sends it to Strava anyway (or to RideWithGPS), so why not just own it, and stop doing dev work on a poor front end and UX that requires too much effort to bring to par anyway. Besides, they would inherit a huge, competitive, high perfrormance, international community in the process, almost all of whom already own a Garmin Edge or wearable. This means that their database of user data used to develop performance algorithms and features will grow and that improves accuracy, inspires new metrics, and is a captive user base for more useful integrated hardware.

    My response from Garmin

    All,

In an effort to share knowledge with the community please find detailed below the email I sent to Garmin support earlier this week and the (poor) response that I received this morning regarding this ongoing issue with segments:

    My email:
Garmin, PLEASE can you explain to your users why the segments portion of your Garmin Edge units and on Garmin Connect has been turned off for MONTHS. From what I can tell there has been no effort whatsoever to notify your users in a clear way as to WHY this functionality is not available. Many many users have been speaking about this for months in your own forum with apparent complete lack of care from yourselves. All we want is a reason as to why this is taking so long and if you ever plan of fixing it. Please read through the following Garmin forum and read the thoughts of your own customers: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?340149-Connect-not-picking-up-Segments/page11&highlight=segment Some customer care would be appreciated.

    Response:
Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.

    I can understand your frustration.

Unfortunately, it's difficult to tell when this issue will be resolved. Our software engineers tend to be expedient when known issues occur, but if an issue is very complex, it can take a significant period of time.

I'm sorry that I am unable to give you any more information than that.

If there is anything else I can help you with then please let me know. Alternatively you can search for a solution here: http://www.garmin.co.uk/support

    Kind regards,
