Connect not picking up Segments

Hi
I am very disappointed that Garmin is not putting more effort into restoring the Segment feature in Garmin Connect. It has now been two weeks since the error was recognised by Garmin and the Garmin Connect Status page still simply reads:

"DOWN Segments
We are currently experiencing issue (sic) in processing your segment matches. We are actively investigating."
https://connect.garmin.com/en-US/status

It is really annoying as it was the main reason I bought an expensive Edge device. It is now much harder to compare my progress while I am training plus I do not want to be pushed into paying for an expensive Strava Premium upgrade just because Garmin can't be bothered to fix something that was supposed to be free.

Anyone else fed up?
  • Gamers would call this an "epic fail".

IMHO this now also getting some legal aspect because Garmin is still using the segments feature for marketing issues. E.g. they promise this feature as part of their products.

    Example:

"In-ride competitions through Garmin ConnectTm segments"

Yes, very disappointing to say the least. I started having issues with my 510 a couple months ago, posted here on the forum, but did not see this thread. I've been considering upgrading to the 520 since it came out. I like some of the newer features on it, and ended up rationalizing my purchase out of frustration that the segments were not working. So I bought the 520. First week out I posted a PB on one of my favorite segments, and as you all know, it didn't work. Shows on my device, but not uploaded to Garmin Connect.

Today I posted another PB on a different segment, still not working :-( thats when I came to this forum and found this thread.

I have to say, that one of the cool features on the Garmin is the segments. For me, it's a huge motivator in my training. Challenging my self on the leader board, trying to move up the ranks, comparing my times to other riders in my group, etc. Definitely a reason why I decided to stick with Garmin and purchase the 520.

So, with that said, I really hope that they can resolve this and get the segments functioning again. I don't use Strava, and hope that I"m not forced to go that route. I may roll over there one day, but based on the features I want, it looks like I would need to get a paid premium account, and not looking forward to an extra bill.

This is my first post in the forum...I never thought that my first post in a forum were to claim instead to ask questions....

Just to add another claim about that... I've been trying to set segments, thinking that I didn't know to do it, and I realized today that the problem is with Garmin... thanks Garmin, for my time lost.... I spent in Christmas more than 500€ in your products, and you give me the thanks in that way...

I am in Spain, we are also suffering the same as all of you...

Well said. Exactly my thoughts. I keep creating Segments, thinking, "Boy, it'll be like Christmas when they finally get this working". More and more lately, I've been wondering if that's just a pipe dream.
  • Yep - another feature not working on the 630. I'm an unpaid Beta tester hey ho.

    segments

Garmin has given up on segments and it seems that strava has taken over. If you want segments you will have to join strava. I have the edge 1000 and the segment function has changed from garmin to strava live time segments some how. You can get your old segment times from garmin by exporting your activity as gpx then importing back to garmin and they then come up on the strava segment times. You even can get your old ones back as they Don't vanish after a year unlike garmin. Downside is that if you want age groups you need to pay, but what is 80p week? Otherwise it is free.

I got an email today to say they're still fixing it but have no time-frame for completion of the work. Their communication is poor and the fixing time is way too long but there's no need to spread rumours like that with no substance.

You can change back to Garmin segments, it's in your settings on the Garmin Connect site. You can't use Strava segments live like you can Garmin one's unless you subscribe to Strava Premium.
  • They're gping to fix it.

I also just got a return email from Garmin stating that it will be fixed. No time frame was mentioned.
  • Fix the segments !!

I too REALLY love segments, please hurry up and fix it.

    Jumped ship

Well, I finally got sick of waiting and I'm using tapiriik to transfer all past Connect activities to Strava. I've been on the sidelines of Segments for too long now.

This is a ball drop for Garmin, because now, what is tying me to them? Connect is hugely deficient without functioning Segments. Connect's reporting is superior to Nike and Runkeeper, but Strava can work with any GPS device, so next time I purchase one, it doesn't have to be Garmin.

Maybe they've decided to let Strava be the leader on data presentation, and focus on data collection with the GPS units. Though they also seem to be focusing like crazy on steps/sleep tracking. I honestly don't know why they'd let Segments stay broken this long. They clearly don't care enough, because anything can be accomplished if enough resources are devoted to it.
