Airpods connect/disconnect to iPhone

I recently got a Fenix 8 47 mm AMOLED and really love it HOWEVER, for some reason my Airpods have stopped working with my iphone. I do not want to connect the airpods to the watch and haven'r done so eather, but not when I want to use the airpods with my phone, they keep connecting and disconnecting instantly. I know its the garmin watch / app spooking because they work perfect when the watch is disconnected.

I have also tried resetting the airpod connection with my iphone but with the same results.

Anyone else experienced this and know how to solve it?

  • I am having the same issue with a week old Fenix8 47mm and my brand new AirPods Pro 3. It’s very, very annoying. I’ve tried all the fixes I could Google, including the fixes mentioned in this thread and still getting the issue

  • Appreciate the response, DK.

Would it be possible to share whether Garmin has been able to reproduce this issue internally and whether it is currently being tracked as a known issue under investigation?

You mentioned that meaningful updates will be posted in this thread, but reports have been coming in for nearly two months without any tangible update. From a customer perspective, that makes it difficult to see whether this issue is receiving the attention it deserves.

Even a simple confirmation that the issue has been reproduced and escalated to engineering would be reassuring, and would help me decide whether to keep the watch or make use of my return window while it is still available.

  • I just bought the Garmin 970 Forerunner. I am always using my AirPods for phone calls at work at day. While at work my watch is almost useless because I use it to see all my notifications. It would be awesome if you guys could fix this.

  • I just recently lost my Epix Gen2 which I had owned for a while - maybe 3 or 4 years, replaced it with a fenix8 51 mm and, while I love the watch, I also love my airpods pro3s and prefer to have them connect to my ipone. Here are the details -

1 - If I open Connect and leave it open, my airpods disconnect and when I try to reconnect, they automatically drop (connect/disconnect is immediate).

2 - If I dismiss Connect (app select, swipe it up), airpods can reconnect but eventually they drop out randomly, if I reopen Connect, then dismiss it, then I can keep doing this dance. Not sure how often Connect opens and syncs in the background, but I assume that's the cause.

    3. If I stop Connect from syncing to my fenix in the bluetooth settings (why is this even a bluetooth setting? Did AI write that code?) then my airpods are fine but obviously the watch doesn't sync.

Every explanation I have found is that this is Connect hijacking the bluetooth comms, but it didn't do that with my Epix G2, so it's defs something about the way connect syncs to newer models.

PLEASE fix this. I still have the packaging and I don't want to return the fenix but I use my airpods way more and I am 24 hours in and already fed up.

  • The problem is Garmin Connect App. Once I hard close it, the toggle stops between AirPods and my Forerunner 970.

Once I open the app again it starts once more after a minute or so.

  • The same issue. iPhone 16 Pro Max, AirPods Pro 3 and fenix 8 47 mm Amoled. Garmin should solve this immediately!

  • I got a new vivosmart 5 today and had the same problem. My AirPods were dropping and reconnecting constantly. I repaired both AirPods and vivosmart multiple times. I was in the Garmin app and it showed that the app was trying to push an update. It took forever (~45 min) to finish but the update finally pushed and the watch restarted. Since then the AirPods have stayed connected without an issue. It has not been a long time so it could backslide at any moment but for the time being the problem maybe resolved. Maybe the app is trying to push an update?

  • I had the same problem. Turns out my new vivosmart had a couple updates to be pushed and maybe the bluetooth adapter was being hogged by garmin. I had to sit with the app open staring at the very slow progress bar under my device saying "sending software update" for around an hour. Now my headphones have not disconnected in 3+ hours. Try opening the devices screen and see if an update pops up.

  • I have an iPhone 16 Pro and I use AirPod pros. I have the Garmin 970. Everything works correctly now. I don’t know if you guys did anything but everything‘s good.

  • I am having the same issue where I am just setting up a new fenix today. I am seperately connected with my airpods pro to my phone and it continuously disconnects and reconnects. Totally insane and makes the watch unwearble. What an absolute joke
