BUG - Garmin Connect Sync erasing training load ratings in apple health - Sync overwriting activities each time

Everytime I sync my garmin in garmin connect, it resends the activity data to apple health, overwriting what was previously there. This results in any training load ratings for the same activities in apple health being overwritten, rendering training load tracking in apple health essentially useless. The syncing of activities from garmin connect to apple health needs to be limited, so activities are not being overwritten over everytime, but rather sent over once. The issue is not on apple's end but rather with connects syncing algorithm.

  • Because this hasn't been reported anywhere internally by any other users, I'd like to make sure we cover all bases, so please bear with me on some troubleshooting steps that might help. Even if you've tried this previously, please try this again.

I'd like you all to disconnect your Garmin account from Apple Health by following the steps found here, under "Other Third-Party Site."

If you need assistance with merging them back, the instructions are found here.

  • I had already disconnected Connect from Apple Health due to this issue so I turned it back on and then went into connect to edit my ride from today. That ride did push to Apple Health and Fitness with no effort rating/evaluation and all of my previous rides from Connect had their effort cleared from Apple Fitness even though I only edited the ride from today.

  • this is not apple healths fault, this is how Garmin syncs from connect. every time you sync it goes back 1-2 weeks and syncs everything again, activities, steps, sleep, blood pressure for example. it should be if it is synced once then dont sync same again. do a search in this forum and you will find other threads that are way older

  • It’s interesting that you mentioned the one week timeframe because I noticed earlier that a ride from over a week ago did not clear the effort.

  • Saw there was an update today and got excited that maybe this was fixed so I reenable Apple Health to connect to Garmin. Ended up with the same result. We’re all efforts were cleared on previous rides. Back to turn it off and let Strava do it.

  • its been this way since they implemented apple health sync, I have stopped hoping. I really dont think Garmin is that bad at programing, I think this is on purpose.

People would use more apple health and apple watch and just sync training with Garmin connect if Garmin synced everything perfect.

I use rungap to sync my activities to apple health, works perfect

    1. This needs to be fixed Garmin. After doing some research, I found a solution that allows me to control how many workouts are pushed into AppleHealth. RunGap, an app on the AppStore, currently allows me to isolate that push. It’s not the desired solution but it works today. We should NOT have to pay for a 3rd party app to fix a problem that your engineering team should be able to solve with a minor sprint.
  • For whatever it’s worth I’m having the same issue. I just got an Edge 850 and setup syncing with Apple. The workouts make it over there just fine. Then I set an effort rating in Apple Fitness and that works. But if I go back into Garmin Connect and look at the workout the effort rating I set in Apple is unset next time I pull up Apple Fitness.

  • It's a coding issue. It appears the connect app is currently coded to sync every single workout to apple health every single time, regardless of whether the workout is new or not. The connect app needs to be recoded to only sync new, (i.e. previously unsynced) workouts only as to not overwrite the previous data every time. It has been reported by numerous users on this forum and on other platforms online. When can we anticipate the coding will be fixed?

  • Updated to Garmin Connect 5.28 on iOS today. The bug is still present.
