Apple Activity Rings not updating with Garmin workouts

I'm looking for some level of confirmation as to whether or not I'm doing something wrong in my setup.

I have a Fenix 7S watch that syncs with the Garmin Connect iOS app after ending my tennis training.

The training activities gets logged in the Apple Health app through the Garmin Connect app, but fails to move any rings in the Apple Fitness app.

Am I missing something obvious?

I have tried installing additional apps like Strava but I guess Strava requires the activity to be recorded on the app while performing the activity, and I never have the phone on me during workouts, only the Garmin Fenix 7S watch.

Garmin Connect iOS App v4.62.3 (23-Jan-2023)

  • SETM,

    Thanks for the update

definitely NOT shooting the messenger here. I have an AW4 and a Garmin Venu 2+. The workaround you suggest doesn’t work for me. I have tried many times and the Apple Watch rings stay empty. Anything I’m missing? Do I need to give some permission other than let Garmin connect write to apple health?

  • Not sure if this helps, but to get my Fenix 5X to sync with my Apple Watch, I have to repeatedly tell Garmin Connect to sync with my Fenix. After multiple times watching it sync, it finally triggers the Apple Watch to update and the rings fill in. Sometimes I see the workout show up in the Apple Activity app first before the Watch acknowledges the workout. Sometimes it just happens on its own after Garmin Connect shows my workout. Your mileage may vary.

  • Well, it worked. I did a workout using my Garmin. Came home and opened garmin connect pushed sync. Looked at my AW and the ring show the data. Later,  I’ll see if it updates without the AW by looking at the fitness app on my phone. We’re getting there.

  • Did another workout and the fitness app only updated after the AW gets the update of the workout. In summary, an Apple Watch is needed to update the rings.

  • and Activity rings do not fill.

  • I still have an issue.

  • Hello

I read that super long thread about this issue that began some years ago with the reported fix in Garmin Connect.  However, I am still having the issue of the Apple Fitness rings not updating.  The workouts and steps from Garmin watch show up in Apple Health, and the workouts show up in Apple fitness, but the steps do not show up in Apple fitness, and neither the move ring (red) or exercise ring (green) are updating.

This is with a Garmin Epix 2 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro w/ iOS 16.5.1, and Apple Ultra Watch running whatever the latest Apple Watch OS is (I don't have that watch in front of me).  I also have the latest Garmin Connect app version 4.68.1.2 installed on my iPhone.  All health permissions etc. are on.

Again, my workouts and steps are showing up in Apple Health.  My workouts are showing up in Apple Fitness but not my steps. And none of the rings are updating.  I also moved Garmin Connect up to the top of the list in Apple Health > Steps > Data Sources and Access.

  • Simply, I gave up. I Only use my Garmin watch as an accesory. Use AW S4 for fitness. Honestly , if Apple made a round watch I would not have the Garmin. Come on Apple, what is taking you so long?

  • I have had the rings not moving as a bug report and after providing a lot of data Garmin Devs saw the issue but decided to not do anything about it. You can only expect data to be written to health. If you also want the rings to move you need an Apple Watch as well and when open the Fitness App on Apple Watch then it will read what is in Apple Health and only then it will synchronize the data with your Fitness App on the phone. No Apple Watch - no Rings will be moved.

How steps are written to Health does neither follow the Apple Health Kit way of doing it. Garmin Connect only write to Apple Health when GC App synched and then it takes the exercises and steps and write to Apple Health. So if not yet synched to Apple Health for this day and then e.g,, walked some steps between 9:00-9:03, 9:30-9:40, 9:55-10:07 and then synched at 14:02 then GC App would have written those steps happening between 00:00-14:02 instead as of logging 3 different logs (9:00-9:03, 9:30-9:40, 9:55-10:07) which AW does. This may shadow data from other Apps or AW if Garmin have higher prio so that these does not count.

    Garmins final answer was

"To summarize, The way it works is according to our design" and if if any change then they said it needs to be on Apple's side. With other word Garmin does not follow how to use the API correctly instead they think Apple should adapt to their way of using the API

    I gave up on this
