Apple Activity Rings not updating with Garmin workouts

I'm looking for some level of confirmation as to whether or not I'm doing something wrong in my setup.

I have a Fenix 7S watch that syncs with the Garmin Connect iOS app after ending my tennis training.

The training activities gets logged in the Apple Health app through the Garmin Connect app, but fails to move any rings in the Apple Fitness app.

Am I missing something obvious?

I have tried installing additional apps like Strava but I guess Strava requires the activity to be recorded on the app while performing the activity, and I never have the phone on me during workouts, only the Garmin Fenix 7S watch.

Garmin Connect iOS App v4.62.3 (23-Jan-2023)

  • Hi - This thread is about activities recorded by a Garmin Watch NOT an Apple Watch. It’s well-known that workouts recorded on an Apple Watch syncs and updates both Fitness and Health info well sometimes with just a bit of lag.

  • You clearly didn't read my reply. I specifically indicated that I wore my Garmin watch and that it hadn't shown up in my Apple activity app nor on my Apple Watch when I put it back on. So I did properly provide a response that shows when you aren't seeing your Garmin watch workout/activity show up in Apple Health/Activity app, nor reflected in your move rings, just try to do another workout and see if that gets it to sync finally. If that's not working, then maybe a person can try your routine to get it to work.

  • Interesting thing I just noticed: activity ring is populated correctly for running activities from Garmin watch

Are you sure that the rings were moved due to the logs from Garmin watch and not another source like Apple Watch or the iPhone. If you do a run or walk without any Apple Watch or iPhone as well make sure that no other 3rd party service except Garmin is allowed to write data to health. Will the rings still move then?

  • 30 seconds into an 'other' workout on my Apple Watch, all of a sudden my move ring closed

Still not a valid solution since not all Garmin users also have an Apple Watch. You should not need any other source like AW to trigger the Garmin logs to update the Rings if this is the case. However I will test this later to see if I can reproduce but as I said not a solution to the issue

  • I was able to reproduce what you said… kinda.
Hadnt worn my AW for two days = no data on anything.
went for a swim today. Nothing.
put my AW on afterwards and opened the activity app. Boom, red ring full and others filled  according to the activity (minutes = duration; standing 2 hrs). Yesterday still empty.
so it seems opening the app on the watch triggers the update on the phone. unfortunately, only the activity, but makes sense as Garmin does not store the other two metrics.

can anyone tag Garmin, maybe that helps them in solving it?

I have contact with them. Next week when I able to start over training again after sickness I will do either a walk and run and follow your steps, if it also works for me I will tell Garmin about it. Could be a simple thing as that they need to call som function in the API to publish the data to the rings after adding them to heart that they have missed. This function not called by Garmin is then called when apple watch add som data.which then also read te data provided by Garmin the same day. Would not surprise me if this is the case

By the way a great finding, you may be into something.

  • I only wore my Fenix 5X for that run, no other devices recording my run and writing to Apple Health. On my run this morning, again just wearing my Fenix, after checking Garmin Connect on my phone and seeing that it has synced with the Fenix, I put on my Apple Watch to start my day. The rings had already populated with my run from this morning. So this time I did nothing with my Apple Watch and the Fenix data had synced with Garmin Connect and then Connect obviously wrote to Apple Health. So I can report that so far it seems to be working rather seamlessly (one day's success not a trend obviously). I'll update after next workout with Fenix.  Unfortunately I can't report on swimming but will do a long walk this weekend and see if that works as expected.

  • I have now been able  to reproduce the steps myself. It requires an Apple watch so no real solution to the issue but a very interesting finding that I now mailed Garmin together with pictures to the ongoing ticket that is worked on for solving this issue.

    My finding was a following

Took a walk and as normally, no rings closed. Then I just opened the Fitness App on my Apple watch (AW) after start it up (have not used for weeks) without even take a single step with my AW

By just open the Fitness App on the AW the rings were closed  using the data from my Garmin watch logged to Health. See pictures below

Fitness App on mobile after synched my 5K Walk from Watch

Fitness App on mobile 2 minutes later after firs having opened the fitness App on the Apple watch which triggered the rings to move

  • If I were to make a guess it seems that the Watch app itself could be the issue in the way it might be working as a proxy for connecting those three devices. If I had your setup I would try removing the Watch app + data associated with the watch from the iPhone (keep iCloud backup of the watch) and then see if the move ring gets updated after a new walk activity.

  • I'll not doing that. The problem is for GARMIN to fix. What I believe is rather that after GARMIN has added data to health they have missed to call some 'update' function that populates the data to the rings, which now could be triggered by open the fitness app on the AW. They first have to investigate this themselves.
