Apple Activity Rings not updating with Garmin workouts

I'm looking for some level of confirmation as to whether or not I'm doing something wrong in my setup.

I have a Fenix 7S watch that syncs with the Garmin Connect iOS app after ending my tennis training.

The training activities gets logged in the Apple Health app through the Garmin Connect app, but fails to move any rings in the Apple Fitness app.

Am I missing something obvious?

I have tried installing additional apps like Strava but I guess Strava requires the activity to be recorded on the app while performing the activity, and I never have the phone on me during workouts, only the Garmin Fenix 7S watch.

Garmin Connect iOS App v4.62.3 (23-Jan-2023)

  • Here are my images from Apple health, but also from the fitness app that shows no movement in the rings despite everything toggled on and trainings logged in Health App

  • I found a fix that made the red activity ring move in the fitness app. It's sort of a reset all and hope for the best approach so keep this in mind.

NOTE: Not any of the other rings are moving but the red ring. Only my activities from about 2 weeks back are synced to the fitness app - I was hoping that all Activities from Garmin Connect would sync, but still haven't after a full week of sync and use..

    1. Make sure all data is synced to Garmin Connect.
    2. Delete the Apple Watch app, if you’ve previously connected an Apple Watch to your phone.
    3. Delete the Apple Fitness app. When prompted look up the data recorded by the Fitness app and remove all data manually.
    4. Delete the Garmin Connect app. When prompted look up the data recorded by the Fitness app and remove all data manually.
    5. Delete the Apple Health app. When prompted look up the data recorded by the Fitness app and remove all data manually.
    6. Remove any other app like Strava, RunKeeper (etc) that are also writing fitness data to the Health and Fitness App.
    7. Restart your iPhone
    8. Go to your Garmin Connect online account and verify your birthday, height and weight (they need to be the same as registered through iCloud/Apple Health app).
    9. Re-download and install the Apple Health app. Go to your Profile settings and confirm that your birthday, height and weight is set to the same date as in Garmin Connect.
    10. Re-download the Apple Fitness app. This should now have the same birthday, height and weight info as updated in the Health app.
    11. Re-download the Garmin Connect app and connect with Apple Health.
    12. Wait for sync is complete.

Can anyone confirm if this also works for them?

  • thank you.  May I have your permission to email you?

  • Yes, Kevin, you can email me

  • Interesting thing I just noticed: activity ring is populated correctly for running activities from Garmin watch, but not for swimming. They are all there, but swimming does not count in the ring while running does. Not sure about others, I believe gym workout counts in too, but this was back to back with an indoor run and you can’t zoom in to see a potential difference.

so yeah, some count and some don’t… just wanted to add some more complexity to this problem

  • Hi SETM,

Did you try out the proposed solution and confirm if this works for you? Also, could be interesting to hear if you'd previously owned an Apple Watch and have had the Watch app installed on your phone?

  • No, have not tried out yet. And I own an Apple Watch as well and the watch app is installed on phone

I have reported the bug and have been asked by Garmin to provide more data which I will do at the end of this week.

  • This issue was reported months ago. Garmin doesn’t update the rings. Garmin-Kevin was the representative that worked on the issue. Supposedly, it was fixed with the newest release of garmin connect. It wasn’t. He didn’t even bother to validate that it was fixed and closed the issue.

i won’t delete all my data to make this work. Until Garmin gets it together. My Venu 2 plus will continue to be just a watch that i use casually and my Apple Watch the watch for fitness. There are a lot of things where the Garmin watches fall short as smart watches.

  • I finally decided to trust that Garmin Connect would sync with the Apple Watch, Health and Activity app. So I didn't wear both of my watches, just my Garmin :O When I finished my run this morning, alas, nothing synced. Two hours later, still nothing synced. As I was now reading this thread,  I decided I better start recording an exercise of some kind to close my move ring today. 30 seconds into an 'other' workout on my Apple Watch, all of a sudden my move ring closed. So before you try anything so drastic (which I understand you have to do some times), just try to do another workout on the Apple Watch and maybe that's what kicks the sync into gear or at least gets the Apple Watch to show the workout in your move rings. So, it worked! And, even better, I got credit for a stand goal during that period of time so it seems to be behaving, albeit not instantly. I made no other changes to Garmin Connect settings or to my Apple Watch.
