Move/Active calories less accurate when synching with Apple Health

Since the last Connect update (4.62) the data sunched for move/active calories seems to be accurate but Apple is not recognizing it for the Move ring.

Previously it would double and then reset to normal at the end of the day.  Now it seems to not even register.

I wonder what the complexity is with synching this data between ecosystems.  It must be pretty complex. I enjoyed competing with my wife on move challenges (she has an Apple Watch). But now it's not even close to accurate.

It's certainly not the end of the world.  But would be great to get sorted out.

  • Yup. Here also. The latest update seems to have broken the syncing. I get exactly the same thing on my move ring as the above screenshot.
    Please fix it

  • I experience the same issue. Garmin sent a mail (that is good) were they claimed to have solved the issue

"We're following up on the report we received that your calories and activities from Garmin Connect weren't populating your Move ring in your Apple Health app. We're pleased to announce the release of version 4.62 of our Connect app, which resolves this issue"

However problem still exist despite that I am on 4.62. I have tried sync and restarted both Connect App, Health App, and Fitness App but nothing helps. Rings are still empty despite a 5K run. The run is visible in the Health App, the data is there, but rings are empty.

With this said here are some screenshots of the issue

    Using the 4.62 version

Settings for Health App allowing connect to write and read, all toggled On

Activity has been populated to fitness App from Garmin Connect

Ring in Fitness App is still empty even though Activity is there

Interesting though that the run was registered as Outdoor running (Uthomhuslöpning) when it actually was a Treadmill and that is also what is shown in the connect App.

For information I had Garmin Connect as the second source in the list. A training App for strength training was above the connect App. But no exercise was recorded using that App. According to Apple it is just if both the Apps provide same data that Apple health should use the list to prioritize which data to use, but if only one of the App provides data, then that data shall be selected even though not top of list. I do not know if this is the problem but worth mention

Further more steps does neither contribute to the rings

Garmin you really need to look into how you populate your data to Apple Health. Apple has a great API with good documentation (apple Health Kit) on how to get this work,

What should be in place is to populate the following data to Apple Health since Garmin Connect has the data available. The data I am missing in Health is

    • Breath Frequency
    • HRV data
    • Fitness (VO2)
    • Running speed
    • Running power
    • Vertical oscillation
    • Running Step length
    • Running Ground contact time
    • Standing Hours
    • Standing minutes
    • Blood oxygen
    • Activity minutes

Garmin Connect Mobile iOS really hope you can solve this issue. It is not working well right now

  • I have reported issue to Garmin support for Garmin Connect App with link to thread

  • Same problem here. Even after the latest update the Apple Move ring doesn't seem to respond to Garmin activities (although Garmin claimed to have solved the problem in a different thread).

  • All make sure you put your Apple Watch on for a few seconds after your workout , this will trigger the activity rings … it has been working for me after the update ..

only thing that does not work for me is if I do a ride on Zwift and that data  flows to my Garmin Watch and than to health that does not give me activity ring calories , even though I see them …. Appears you need to do the workout right from that Watch than to health app.

  • This tread is not about Apple Watch but about connection Garmin Connect and Apple Health.

  • If you read carefully the first post mentions the move ring and from my experience and research you need an Apple Watch to have any of the rings move regardless of what you do the work out on … but I do apologize if something has changed and an Apple Watch is not needed for the activity rings ..

You can use the Fitness app to track your daily activity, set a move goal, see your progress, and see your movement trends over time—even if you don’t have an Apple Watch.

  • Wow thanks I had no idea … always thought I needed the watch

  • The move ring just updates based on calories.  Which, as near as I can tell Garmin didn't change for cycling based activities (no time stamps) the same way they did for running (which now has start and end times).  SO, if my very limited test is correct, Cycling tracked on a Garmin does not count for Apple Fitness.  (because Garmin didn't really solve the problem in a way that any of us were asking for, they just put barely enough of a bandaid on that they can say that some lmited use cases now work.

No clue what's going on for SETM, because thats running, not cycling, so in theory they fixed it.  The first thing to check is go into the specific activity in Apple Fitness and drill down in the active calories data and see if the sample is logged with a start and end time (It might just have nothing, as it does for cycling, and did for running until a couple of days ago).  If not, thats the problem.
