improvement suggestions

hi Garmin,

I have recently upgraded my old FR 310XT to a shiny new FR 955, and whilst I really like the watch and Garmin Connect app in general I also have some improvement suggestions based on the merging the possibilities on the watch with those in the Garmin Connect app itself that could really enhance the user experience.

  1. Ability to create my own training on the watch
    1. It should be possible to create a training on the watch itself (using the app) based on the activities that I have created.
      1. I have customised a few activities (walk, jog, tempo, sprint) with their own individual screens. However, I cannot use these when creating my own training in the "Training" part of the app.
      2. In the Training part of the app, I cannot chose my customised activities.
      3. When starting the exercise, I can only chose ONE profile, which means only one screen setup, stats of overall training etc.
      4. I would like the stats to be displayed per activity, ie one average pace for jog, one for tempo, one for sprint etc as this gives much better transparency of my the individual parts of the training. And it would feel more rewarding "getting the right points for the exercise" Slight smile
      5. I can setup something like the above under Triathlon on the watch activities, but it does not quite fit the purpose as I cannot input things like warm-up, 3 rounds of jog followed by 3 rounds of sprint, followed again by 3 rounds of jog (as I can on the Training part of the app) then cool-down.
    2. I like creating training on the phone, but it has the above limitations that I do not have access to one profile per activity in the training.
  2. Create General Training vs individual training in the calendar
    1. It should be possible to create one Generic training which would not be changed by changing the training sessions in the calendar.
      1. I have created my own training which I have sent to the watch and to the calendar. However, if I change the training in the calendar, I also change the overall Training that I have created, and overwrite targets etc
      2. a lot of time could be saved if the training I created myself would be a "Generic" training of let's say warm-up, 3 rounds of jog (5:10-5:40 mins/km) followed by 3 rounds of sprint/walk (4:00-4:20 min/km), followed again by 3 rounds of jog/walk (5:20-5:50 mins/km), then cool-down. These individual activities would have individual target times etc.
        1. this training I would send to the calendar, and based and the training of the day I could easily correct the traning to 10 rounds of jog/walk (5:10-5:40 mins/km), and remove sprint and the last rounds of jog. Might not sound like much, but it would really save me a lot of time.
  3. Share Training with friends
    1. I like to run with friends, and I would like to be able to send the training session I have prepared to my friends' Garmin watches, so that we can syncronise when we start, and then my friends follow the same training session, but are linked to their own data (pace, HR etc). Or we could even do the same training session without meeting up. This would be handy since our kids fall asleep at different times. This possibility could obviously be limited to a few friends only if need be, and receiving it would require a compatible Garmin watch.
  4. Meassure Restitution pulse as part of Cool-Down
    1. I would like the possibility of having Restitution Pulse meassured automatically after an excercise. Maybe this is doable in Training, but in that case I have not found it yet. Instead I have circumvented this by stopping the training after my last round when Cool-Down starts and then choose it manually. It would just make more sense if it could be done automatically, as I could on my old FR 310XT.

Those were all for now.

Pls let me know what you think.

  • The system is not designed to be used in the way you like. A workout use only one type and you do all the steps in one activity.

I know, but that is why I am suggesting it Slight smile

  • Yes, but you are suggesting it from the aspect of your custom profiles which isn't what needs to be done. The change that needs to be implemented is to be able to create multisport workouts.

  • It is probably a major change in creating multisport workouts and probably not easy to implement. Otherwise we would've already had it since Garmin seems to have a good eye on triathlon.

I am not suggesting it for Triathlon purposes. I am suggesting it for improving my individual training sessions. If I was to skip warm-up, cool-down, in-session restitution I could easily set it up the way I wanted. This is what I did before and during my Ironman 12 years ago, using my 310XT. However, I am now 12 years older and aim at setting up training that encompasses proper warm-up, in-training restitution (to avoid over-training) and tracking-cool-down. All-in-all keeping a better allround track of my progress. Everything just gets more complicated when you approach the 50-year mark Slight smile My point is just, that if Garmin would merge the functionalities as I describe, it would make it a lot more useful.

  • You are actually asking for workouts for multisport since you are doing multisport activities when you are switching profiles.

  • Yes, but you are suggesting it from the aspect of your custom profiles which isn't what needs to be done. The change that needs to be implemented is to be able to create multisport workouts.

I appreciate your efforts in helping me out, I really do. IF Multisport offered the same flexibility as Training on the app did, then I agree it would suffice. But it doesn't. In multisport I cannot add more activities, only create various screens as you suggest, I cannot add individual activities. I have copied the triathlon profile in order to make a custom run profile. Again, this is rather rigid and only offers up to 5 activities in a fixed roll. This is the closest option to fulfilling my request, but there's still no cigar as it is not as flexible as the Training programme on the app. Would I get the same flexibility of adding the activities I wanted and repetitions easily, then it would totally suffice.

  • yes, but Multisport with the same flexibility as Create Training on the app.

AND the option to transfer this generic Multisport to my calendar, where I can then adjust the repetitions and profiles as I feel like on the day, without changing the overall Multisport.

  • Why does Garmin only allow me to select certain exercises for strength training? A lot of the exercises I do aren’t even available. It’s also difficult to integrate supersets. Is there anyway around this?
