improvement suggestions

hi Garmin,

I have recently upgraded my old FR 310XT to a shiny new FR 955, and whilst I really like the watch and Garmin Connect app in general I also have some improvement suggestions based on the merging the possibilities on the watch with those in the Garmin Connect app itself that could really enhance the user experience.

  1. Ability to create my own training on the watch
    1. It should be possible to create a training on the watch itself (using the app) based on the activities that I have created.
      1. I have customised a few activities (walk, jog, tempo, sprint) with their own individual screens. However, I cannot use these when creating my own training in the "Training" part of the app.
      2. In the Training part of the app, I cannot chose my customised activities.
      3. When starting the exercise, I can only chose ONE profile, which means only one screen setup, stats of overall training etc.
      4. I would like the stats to be displayed per activity, ie one average pace for jog, one for tempo, one for sprint etc as this gives much better transparency of my the individual parts of the training. And it would feel more rewarding "getting the right points for the exercise" Slight smile
      5. I can setup something like the above under Triathlon on the watch activities, but it does not quite fit the purpose as I cannot input things like warm-up, 3 rounds of jog followed by 3 rounds of sprint, followed again by 3 rounds of jog (as I can on the Training part of the app) then cool-down.
    2. I like creating training on the phone, but it has the above limitations that I do not have access to one profile per activity in the training.
  2. Create General Training vs individual training in the calendar
    1. It should be possible to create one Generic training which would not be changed by changing the training sessions in the calendar.
      1. I have created my own training which I have sent to the watch and to the calendar. However, if I change the training in the calendar, I also change the overall Training that I have created, and overwrite targets etc
      2. a lot of time could be saved if the training I created myself would be a "Generic" training of let's say warm-up, 3 rounds of jog (5:10-5:40 mins/km) followed by 3 rounds of sprint/walk (4:00-4:20 min/km), followed again by 3 rounds of jog/walk (5:20-5:50 mins/km), then cool-down. These individual activities would have individual target times etc.
        1. this training I would send to the calendar, and based and the training of the day I could easily correct the traning to 10 rounds of jog/walk (5:10-5:40 mins/km), and remove sprint and the last rounds of jog. Might not sound like much, but it would really save me a lot of time.
  3. Share Training with friends
    1. I like to run with friends, and I would like to be able to send the training session I have prepared to my friends' Garmin watches, so that we can syncronise when we start, and then my friends follow the same training session, but are linked to their own data (pace, HR etc). Or we could even do the same training session without meeting up. This would be handy since our kids fall asleep at different times. This possibility could obviously be limited to a few friends only if need be, and receiving it would require a compatible Garmin watch.
  4. Meassure Restitution pulse as part of Cool-Down
    1. I would like the possibility of having Restitution Pulse meassured automatically after an excercise. Maybe this is doable in Training, but in that case I have not found it yet. Instead I have circumvented this by stopping the training after my last round when Cool-Down starts and then choose it manually. It would just make more sense if it could be done automatically, as I could on my old FR 310XT.

Those were all for now.

Pls let me know what you think.

    • I have customised a few activities (walk, jog, tempo, sprint) with their own individual screens. However, I cannot use these when creating my own training in the "Training" part of the app.

On your watch you got activity profiles that are based on activity types. When you create a workout you create them from a activity type. Not an activity profile. That is why you can't select your custom profiles.

Create your workouts so the type matches the type used in your activity profile and you can then start the workout from your profiles. So, there isn't really any need to create the workout with your custom profiles. Your profiles can start the workouts as long as the types match. The implementation today is a lot more flexible than the one you are asking for. All your profiles that are based on the running type can now start any workout that is created with the running type.

  • Meassure Restitution pulse as part of Cool-Down

The recovery HR is automatically measured as soon as you've pressed stop. After two minutes you can view the value. To view the value you need to select Recovery HR.

  • Share Training with friends

You can share workouts with your friends now, but it isn't user friendly. You need to fetch the FIT file for the workout from the watch and then copy the file to the other watches.

It is probably easier to use a 3rd party service that can share workouts and use that instead.

thank you for your answer e7andy.

basing my workout on the combination of various custom profiles is exactly what I am suggesting though. for my running sessions I want to combine Warm-Up, 4*1 km of light jogging with 30 secs of restitution after 1 km. This should be followed by 3*200 meters sprint with 30 secs of restitution per sprint, again followed by 3*1 km of light jogging. Lastly I would like to spend 5 mins of Cool-Cown. For each profile, I would like stats like average pace, HR etc, and for each profile I would like to build my own screen for the watch.

It makes no sense to me that I just see the stats for the overall workout (except far down in the overview). Additionally, during Warm-Up I am only interested in the time and length on the screen, when jogging I want another screen with more data, and when I sprint I only want pace and length.

  • yes, but only if I stop the session completely. This way I do not register my Cool-Down. I am suggesting the Recovery HR to be meassured while I am doing Cool-Down, so that I keep track of my Cool-Down time and the Recovery HR is more accurate when being measured from when I stop running.

maybe, but I am a "one-app fits all"-kindaguy Slight smile

My friends and I all have a Garmin watch, and it ought to be a very simple share. I make a training session for us one day, and my friends make a joint training session another time. Since I can share my own training with friends, it ought to be easy to arrange a joint training session as well.

sorry, but I beg to differ on the flexibility.

It is only for the Triathlon profile that I can put in the various activities, but this also has limitations. I can only rotate between up to 5 different activities in a fixed roll. I cannot choose the afore-mentioned training session. Setting up a training on the GC app is far easier and far more flexible than on the watch. However, I can only choose one activity profile for the overall training session. This is what bugs me.

Garmin have it all available, I would just like to be able to combine the best of both the Training session and the training profiles.

  • But that is not recovery HR. Your recovery HR will be a lot less if you continue to move while measuring it.

The HR you are looking for is something else and you can easily view that in the HR chart.

  • You can have many screens in a profile and switch between the screens depending on what you are interested in. So, you can have all your screens in one profile instead of switching between different run profiles.

You can see the data for each step in the activity details.

You are creating multisport activities by switching between profiles and you can't create workouts for those. That function is not available for multisport activities. It is a multisport activitiy even if you only are using profiles based on the run type.

  • You can create multisport activities with any number of activities in it if you use ad-hoc multisport, but there is probably a limitation in the prepared multisport types.

The system is not designed to be used in the way you like. A workout use only one type and you do all the steps in one activity.

It is probably a major change in creating multisport workouts and probably not easy to implement. Otherwise we would've already had it since Garmin seems to have a good eye on triathlon.
