My daily active calories is way higher my activity active calories

  1. I did a 12km hike today which took 3 and a half hours and my active calories for that activity was 1331. I woke up, drove to the mountain, did my hike and then as soon as I finished my walk, I loaded the Garmin Connect app to look at all of the stats for my hike. I noticed straight away that my daily calorie counter said that I had burnt 2400+ active calories but my activity stats say that I had burnt 1331. I hadn’t done any other activity or exercise up to that point to justify why there was a 1100+ activity calorie difference between the two.
I know personally that 1331 calories is realistic, not 2400+.

Can anyone explain this? I’m curious to whether or not my watch is mistaking vibrations from driving as some form of exercise?

FYI I have a newly purchased Garmin Instinct 2 Solar.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks,

Craig

  • You burn active Calories all day long, not only during activities. Whenever your heart rate is above your 7-days average Resting HR, it generates Active Calories.

  • Hi trux,

I understand that but the calories ive stated in my initial post was straight after I had completed my hike. All I had done that day other than my hike (prior to my hike) was get out of bed and drive to where I planned to start my hike.

Thank you anyway! I appreciate it. My apologies if I didn’t make that clear in my initial post

  • Please post the daily HR graph for that day

  • Attached below. Just to clarify, my hike finished at approx 1:15pm so the calories we are discussing is only up until 1:15pm. Thanks again for any help!

  • Did you notice how many Active Calories Garmin Connect reported before the hike? You did not wear the watch during the night, and I am not sure how the Calories burn is calculated in such case, so there could have been already certain amount before you started. Try repeating it another day, making a screenshot of the Calories screen before, and after the hike. It will help identifying the problem, if there is any.

  • Nope, sadly I didnt check. I did wear the watch during the night yes but unless I sleep walk, im not sure why it would track active cals.

Thats a good point! I’ll take your advice and do that next time. Ill update this thread with the results.

    Thanks again Trux

  • I did wear the watch during the night yes

I do not see any HR during the night. It only starts at around 6:30 AM

unless I sleep walk, im not sure why it would track active cals.

I do not know what the watch does when no HR is detected, as it is in your case. It may calculate with some average rate.

Besides that, you can burn Active Calories even during the sleep - as long as your HR is higher that the 7-days average Resting HR, it is being counted as Active Calories.
