New to Garmin. Apple health not sharing my history with Garmin Connect.

I’ve come from Apple Watch and when I connected garmin connect to Apple heath it asked if I wanted to bring across my current fitness info so the new forerunner 245 would have my previous exercise history- but it hasn’t the calendar (in connect) shows no previous steps, no previous heart rate no activity at all. How do I get my history into the Garmin so it knows where I’m at?? According to connect it’s the first time today I’ve ever run/walked etc.
Apple Heath is recording what I’m going on the Garmin but the Apple stuff just isn’t sharing any history. Can anyone tell me what I’m doing wrong. Thanks.

  • I guess that is what you get when a company thinks it has a monopoly. Very unfortunate since it means I now need to make sure I use something other than Garmin for all the other activities that I might have considered a Garmin product but have not. I like how it handles my cycling activities, but there are limits here too and not integrating the other information just reduces the value of Garmin Connect.

Ironic that they call it Connect. Perhaps Proprietary would have been a better name.

  • I use RunGap app it's fantastic at filling gaps in all these various software we like such as Strava / Garmin / Apple. I find it quite useful.

  •  Funny you should write this.  I just installed RunGap myself prior to reading this thread and was hoping it would fill all the gaps, but after the syncs I didn’t see any change. By chance I remembered seeing something about needing to subscribe to Swag Bag. Did that, went to each of my connections to get them to sync, and nothing showed up in Connect. I checked the Destinations in advanced setting, Not sure what is happening with RunGap or if it takes a while for Connect to display the values. Specifically I want Strava to Connect sync so that my FulGaz workouts that go to Strava (FulGaz does not have a connector with Garmin Connect) can find their way into Connect.

  • I will be back at my desk in about 30 will then explain how I operate it .

  • Ok so I got RunGAp a while back as Apple and Garmin connections were driving me crazy. They make changes to their API and it takes the other a while to catch up, w with someone like RunGap it is a core of his functionality so he makes a plan to sort this ASAP.

I use Starva also and this is another benefit to me of RunGap , let me explain my methodology (Yes I have the Swag Pack)

    1. If Garmin syncs direct to Starva , then you have no time to review your activity in Garmin first and decide of you actually want to upload that activity. I this have no direct sync to stave form my device or connect account , I push the activities I select to Strava from RunGap when I am ready.

    2. It seems certain Garmin metrics only update once a day to Apple Health so that is also irritating to me , Hence I have. selection of metrics I excluded from the Garmin / Apple sync and I push it to Apple health from RunGap.

SO I downloaded RunGap and installed it.

I connected to Garmin and I pulled all my activities into RunGap (as far as I recall I have approx 3500 at the moment). The great thing is that in RunGap if you've pulled in an activity from Garmin and you needed to fix it still in Garmin you can delete in RunGap , sort in Garmin and Resync to RunGap...really useful if you spot a Typo etc!

Actually same with Strava , you can delete in Strava and push the correction back from runGap.

In Apple Health. Under Settings Health App, choose your name and then under privacy , Apps. I have all the Connect items on EXCEPT Active Energy, Walk and Running distance and Workouts....The rest are less material to me and seem generally to work.

Now when you do that , you should go to Data from Connect lower on the screen and Delete the item in those areas that have been imported  (start with say deleting the Today only as a test) You will repopulate it from Run Gap . This is because if activities are at the same time it won't necessarily bring in form RunGap but may keep connect.

In RunGap, I have Import form Apple Health disabled , but have it selected as a destination (you find this under accounts and settings menu item)

In RunGap under Garmin connect under advanced I have all OFF except Keep Source Titles.

Also on settings I dont do background refresh , I have it as Refresh on open only

So I do my activity and then look at it in Garmin Connect and write my notes etc. I then open RunGap and one then select the activity and on the top ... , select share and then in my case I choose Apple Health and Strava to share the activity with.

I am sure some will say that all this is an unnecessary step etc but it give me piece of mind and control and when something doesnt make sense I have the option and ability to correct it.

I'm really happy with my setup and how RunGap works and the developer is super responsive to queries and suggestions.

FWIW I also have HealthFit App. I found this s time ago when I wanted to import an Apple activity to Garmin connect. It works really well and as far as I recall for what I use it for it is free.

I have it syncing activities from Apple Health. You can then sync the activity as a .gpx etc file to iCloud or Dropbox and then import that into Garmin . I did this for a while when I d have my Garmin with me.

Hope that all helps. Feel free to "shout" if necessary. Tough to explain it all clearly..

    Good luck!

  •  thanks for taking the time and sharing.  It looks like your use case is to populate Apple Health and Strive, where mine is more focused on automating the loading of my Virtual rides from FulGaz into Garmin Connect. I may just need to try the HealthFit app to see if that would do the trick.

For my loading into Apple Health from Connect activities, I let Connect share to Strava and then Strava provides the details to Apple Health. It does cause a duplicate in Apple Health, but Apple appears to have the intelligence to merge the two in a way that does not duplicate data and does not loose out on some of the key things like activity (the Move ring). It could be that I am ignorant to a duplication there though and just like seeing more Move points for self gratification.

Your note of Garmin Connect only syncing at certain times of the day might be another issue as to why I am not seeing anything there at this time. My assumption right now though is that Garmin has closed the door to anything other than manual FIT file uploads.

  • Great , good luck. RunGap may be able to do that also Im not sure but HealthFit and a manual upload as I described works well for me.

  • do you mind my asking if you are talking about HealthFit from Stephane Lizeray? Looking over that HealthFit and Garmin and Connect are not mentioned in the sync connectivity.

  • I do an export of the activity to iCloud and import it into Garmin

  • Hi all, we have a petition going if you wouldn't mind please sign it. It's being sent to garmin once we build up some momentum. See here: https://chng.it/p7j5rFKv
