Why is the training program not adaptive to heart rate?

I am doing a 5k training program by Greg. The second training is a 40 min walk with light tempo (5:45-6:09 per km). My condition is not yet too good so my heart rate went over 160 to reach this pace. This is not effective and requires more recovery time. I would expect the training program to adapt to my condition but it doesn’t. Now the training does not seem effective because because of the high heart rate and too long recovery time. Why is the trainibg program not adaptive ro this?

  • I've also noticed that "adaptive" doesn't seem to include adapt according to HR. It will formulate training depending on what fitness level (=amount you already run) and what time goal you have set, plus age/sex I guess but it doesn't really know your condition (just like it doesn't know I've been trying to train in 36oC heat!).

I am surprised it doesn't ask what our best 5 km time is rather than just how far we run because the mere fact someone can run 5 or even 10 km doesn't at all mean they can do that in a set time. I also find it odd my watch may say Recovery time 36 hours but the plan still has me a workout scheduled before that time has gone by

Have you set a time goal? My experience is only limited to the past 6 months but if your goal is a bit too ambitious (finishing time too low, or completion date too soon), the required pace may well be too high, especially if your current condition isn't reflected in how far you run. I set my time goal but also found the training pace too much for my heart rate. I adjusted the time upwards and pace became more manageable, and my HR has adapted well enough that I am actually now running close to that impossible pace in the first set up. Try changing your time goal through Edit Plan, the pace should become more manageable.

  • Thanks for your reply Dizzy. I will try to set my goal lower. Still Garmin should know my heart rate because it is measured by my watch during the training so I did expect it to adapt the training yo it, or maybe even define parts of the training in terms of bpm instead of min/km….
