Active Calories Recorded on an Instinct Solar or Instinct Solar 2 Not Adding Up Correctly in Garmin Connect Mobile App

Good morning,

I want to preface this post by saying that I’ve read through the forum and older posts and seen many of the same issues, however, many of those are very old (3-6 years) and I was wondering if anything has changed. I also haven’t seen any posts regarding my watch (Garmin Instinct Solar 1st gen). That said, here’s my issue.

My “active calories” from activities I created or took part in are not adding up correctly when my watch saves the data and syncs with Garmin Connect (iOS and web). For example…

This morning I did two workouts. The first was a strength training workout in which I burned 381 ACTIVE calories (not resting or total). I then did a quick ab workout in which I burned 121 ACTIVE calories. Simple math says that upon concluding those two workouts I should have a minimum of 502 Active calories. However, when I check the Connect app on my iPhone, while the individual workout reports show the above active calories burned, when I look at my daily report it says that I’ve only burned 328 active calories. That’s 174 calories less than what my watch and the activities reported.

I understand how active calories vs resting calories work and how those two metrics together make up your total calories. I’m just referring to the active calories not adding up in this case. Has anybody had any issues with this and are there any solutions?

Thank you for your time and patience

  • Hello all,

We have other reports of this and are actively investigating.  When we know more or have any updates to share, I'll be posting to this thread.  Thank you in advance for your patience with us while we conduct this investigation.

If you do not have an Instinct Solar or Instinct Solar 2, please start a new thread.

  • Downloaded the recent update from this week. Still not working. Still not adding active calories correctly. I’ve sent more screenshots to Laura per her request.

  • Has there been any update on this? My discrepancies are only getting larger, sometimes more than a 200 calorie difference between what an activity reads as active calories and what my daily total active calories show. Plus the active calories within the activity are very low (less than 200 active calories for a fast paced 5 mile outdoor walk).

  • Yes and no. Shortly after Kevin’s post above there was a Connect app update (v 4.59.0.30). The rep I’ve been communicating with reached out to me to see if it worked. “Funny” thing is she said that the previous app version (I forgot what the version # was but it was the previous one) SHOULD have been fine. I find that odd since so many of us have been complaining and with the timing of the update, I’m not sure how the previous version could have possibly been fine. Regardless, the update didn’t help. I’ve been running the same tests since the update and it’s still a good 50 calories off. It’s never consistent though. Sometimes it’s off by 50 other times it’s less (or more). It’s also with all of the activities I’ve done, not just one or two specific ones. I suggested that since the total active calories on the watch widget, the daily summary on the app, and the summary on the web all pretty much match, that the problem could possibly be that the active calories burned reported by the activity itself could be the problem but I haven’t heard back. I did send another batch of screenshots but don’t plan on sending anymore. At this point they know what the issue is, they just have to decide if it’s worth fixing for a segment of people who aren’t buying their top of the line product (unless it’s happening across the entire lineup). So yes, there was an update but no, it didn’t work. But hey, at least our watches tell time right!

There may be multiple problems, but your issue is not caused by the GCM app. In your case the Calories get misaligned because your device frequently randomly reboots (as we already confirmed on the first page of this thread), and the monitoring data file holding the totals gets corrupted, and then syncs wrong values to the server. You should have emphasized that, when talking to the Support, and have them analyze the crashlogs on your watch to find the reason of the reboots.

Without fixing the rebooting issue, there will be barely any change. I do not remember any more, and am lazy to read again all the messages, but if you did not perform the master reset to factory defaults, I would do that. And I would not change the configuration or install any CIQ apps, for at least a few days, to see whether the reboots still happen or not. Only then I'd start customizing the watch again, but only slowly step by step, always checking for any reboots for at least a day or two.

  • No, it doesn’t Trux. You can quote me all night long but that doesn’t make it right. The watch has rebooted ONCE since I’ve owned it and multiple people have since reported the EXACT issue I’ve been reporting. I’ve also spoken with multiple Garmin reps who have all confirmed there is an issue and it isn’t with my watch. I have had ZERO other issues with the thing other than the app not being able to add. With all due respect, since I don’t know you, but it seems like you struggle admitting that Garmin may have some issues. It’s technology, it happens. It’s OK to admit they’re not perfect.

  • but it seems like you struggle admitting that Garmin may have some issues

Not at all - I believe the problem comes from the watch, which is Garmin technology Slight smile If you saw it rebooting only once, does not mean it does not reboot regularly just when you do not look at the watch. Frequent reboots are very common at Garmin Instinct 2 Solar (just browse the forum to see dozens of related threads), and they often do cause file corruption. I witnessed several such cases personally.

If the app was the culprit, the Active Calories sum would be all right if you did not use it, synced with Garmin Express and looked at the data in GC Web.

  • The active calories sum IS accurate when not being used. It’s ONLY after an activity that the problem shows up. And to your claim about not seeing it reboot, I wear the watch 24/7 and have been since the problem of calories not adding started. So I guess the watch ONLY reboots at night. Strange. I suppose all the watches that aren’t “rebooting” but have the exact same problem as me are different. Hmmm.

  • I am lazy to read back the long thread, and do not remember this case very well, so maybe I will repeat myself, so sorry for that:

    1. Is the sum of Active Calories (AC) all right in Garmin Connect Web?
    2. When you look up the AC data for past days, is the total of AC also smaller than the sum of ACs from the activities, or does the total change to a greater number, once the day is over?
    3. If the problem is in the app only (and not on the web) - did you already try closing the app and restarting, or clearing the cache or data of the app, to see whether it is not a data caching issue?
  • So I guess the watch ONLY reboots at night. Strange. I suppose all the watches that aren’t “rebooting” but have the exact same problem as me are different. Hmmm.

BTW, I think all Instincts 2 crash or reboot occasionally, just most people do not even notice it, since nobody stares at the screen 24/7. I saw my GI2 rebooting twice, which does not mean it was not more frequent. I do not watch the Active Calories too often, so cannot tell whether there ever was some problem, but the days I checked were all right.
