Active Calories Recorded on an Instinct Solar or Instinct Solar 2 Not Adding Up Correctly in Garmin Connect Mobile App

Good morning,

I want to preface this post by saying that I’ve read through the forum and older posts and seen many of the same issues, however, many of those are very old (3-6 years) and I was wondering if anything has changed. I also haven’t seen any posts regarding my watch (Garmin Instinct Solar 1st gen). That said, here’s my issue.

My “active calories” from activities I created or took part in are not adding up correctly when my watch saves the data and syncs with Garmin Connect (iOS and web). For example…

This morning I did two workouts. The first was a strength training workout in which I burned 381 ACTIVE calories (not resting or total). I then did a quick ab workout in which I burned 121 ACTIVE calories. Simple math says that upon concluding those two workouts I should have a minimum of 502 Active calories. However, when I check the Connect app on my iPhone, while the individual workout reports show the above active calories burned, when I look at my daily report it says that I’ve only burned 328 active calories. That’s 174 calories less than what my watch and the activities reported.

I understand how active calories vs resting calories work and how those two metrics together make up your total calories. I’m just referring to the active calories not adding up in this case. Has anybody had any issues with this and are there any solutions?

Thank you for your time and patience

  • Could you verify the active Calories for given day in Garmin Connect Web? Sometimes it can take two sync cycles, before the totals from the server get back to the app, and in some cases the local cache may retain an older value for some while. Checking the values on GC Web is safer. If there are discrepancies on GC Web too, please post links to the concerned activities, and a screenshot of your daily Calories page.

  • Hi,

Yes I checked the web as soon as I noticed the discrepancy and the web mirrored the app (active calories not matching the two activities). My active calories have changed a bit from my original post time since a few hours have passed and I've burned a few more just in moving around. Attached is the current web metrics showing my caloric numbers for today. Note how it says my total "active" calories are 480, which is still under the 502 I should've gotten from my two workouts (not including my regular active calories burned from just moving around). Since I was at 328 when I posted and I'm now at 480 (a difference of 152), if you take this difference and add it to my active calories from my workouts (381+121), the web and the app should say 654. I'm new to Garmin and I don't see the share option for the two activities so how do I share those with you? I would just take screenshots but I can only post one image to this reply.

    Thanks,

  • I'm new to Garmin and I don't see the share option for the two activities so how do I share those with you?

Open the activity in GC Web, click the padlock icon at the top right, set the visibility to Public, and then copy the address from the browser and paste it here. Later, you can set the activity private again, if you wish.

  • Great thanks!

I'm also including a screenshot of how it looks in my app. Everything matches except the active calories aren't correct in my daily summary..

  • For what it's worth, you can see a substantial drop off in my HR towards the end of the strength training workout. This is when my watch randomly rebooted and for some reason the HR didn't seem very accurate for the remainder of that activity. The activity picked up right where it left off however, so I figured it was all good.. That said, the app should still update my active calories correctly. In other words, if I burned 502 active calories according to the 2 activities in the app that should be reflected in my active calories burned in the daily summary. The reboot of my watch shouldn't have mattered.

  • I did not find any issue in those activities, and the numbers indeed do not add up correctly.

A possible reason could be that the daily Monitoring data did not sync to the server for some reason - either due to a corrupted file, or due to a self-reboot during the day (a problem other Instinct owners complain lately about too), or perhaps a mishap in the account-device association. Have a look at your daily HR, eventually check other daily graphs like for example the Steps, Stress, etc, and watch for gaps in them. If there are any, then either the reboot or an account association are indeed very likely the culprit.

  • This is when my watch randomly rebooted and for some reason the HR didn't seem very accurate for the remainder of that activity.

OK, then it is indeed what I suspected. Unfortunately, we cannot really help you with this issue here on the forum. You'll have to wait till Garmin releases a new firmware fixing the reboot issues. Please report your problem to the Support, it may help them getting more data and fixing it faster.

  • Thanks for your help. It’s frustrating and I’m hoping it’s not a device issue since the watch is less than a week old (I get it, it’s tech and things happen). I noticed the incorrect numbers right away so I’m not sure if it was a reboot on their end unless it happened at that exact time which is possible though. Is there anything on my end, besides keep an eye on future activities? I’d hate to reset to factory settings but I will if this continues.

  • No, it is not a device issue. Earlier version of the firmware did not have this problem. Resetting to factory settings would not help anyway, only a downgrade to an older firmware (though that would reset the settings too).

  • I can see the watch reboot being an issue and I’ll definitely report it (this was the first time it’s happened). Having said that, if the watch sent the correct numbers to the app, which it did if you believe the active calories number in the app, why would the app not add the two active calories numbers together correctly? 1+1 is always 2. This seems like two completely separate issues. Yes my watch rebooted but when it came back up it was as if nothing happened. It even went directly back to my workout. If the workouts say I burned x active calories, that should be reflected in the daily summary screen. I fail to see how the watch reboot impacts that.
