Apple Health Activity Ring does not fill after workout is completed on a Garmin device (Request for improvement on how Garmin Connect writes data to Apple HealthKit SDK)

Hello, I use my Garmin Fenix 6 for all my workouts and my Apple Watch 7 for daily use. When completed a workout, Garmin Connect synchronizes with Apple Health. Apple Health sees the workout data but does not fill the activity ring. Could anyone provide a solution to this? I see its a common problem among Garmin - Apple users. Garmin, please take care of this!! Thank you!

  • . Yes,  if you have sold your Apple Watch and moved to a Garmin, you will need to give up on using Apple Health unless you pay for something like HealthFit or RunGap.  And even then you will not get all-day metrics, only workouts.   Until/unless Garmin fixes their Implimentation of HealthKit, the only metrics I have found to work reliably (not necessarily optimally, but at least these don't break anything if your have your prioritization set correctly) are Heart Rate, Sleep, and Steps.   Everything else that I've tried has at least one data breaking issue.

based on when garmin-kevin said that he was going to show this to folks, I would be amazed if any changes were to happen before late January at the earliest (and I'm not expecting anything that soon).  And that assumes that this gets made a top priority.  And that assumes that any changes are actually made at all.  (and even then we have no idea if things would get better or worse).  In short, while they might be looking at this, I wouldn't get unrealistic expectations.

  • I have a Fenix 6 Sapphire and HRM Pro.

What is the ideal setup for Connect in order to integrate with AppleHealth and Fitness? The data syncd into AppleHealth doesn’t seem to be in real time at all. I think the most accurate data that comes into AppleHealth is at 11:59pm when the day is done? Other than that, data like my resting heart rate as well as active heart rate are all getting doubled. It is adding the data from Connect as well as data from my iphone(not sure how the iPhone is calculating resting and active energy burned)

I know you can set priorities and things in the data but I’ve tried several different ways to do it and I’m just looking for the ideal setup and if it’s possible to achieve real time data without having to wait to the end of the day or wait till the next day and look back. I guess just ditching AppleHealth all together may be an option as well and just rely on Connect?

Also for recorded workouts, when I do strength training; Connect will say I burned 265calories but Apple fitness will claim I only did 140? I recorded a strength activity on my fenix while wearing my HRM pro, not sure why the two different apps are so different…

  • The best option currently if you want Apple Health to work is not to buy Garmin.   Their Implimentation of HealthKit has been broken for years and there are only about three types of data thet they write without issues.   You can look through this forum and see a number of threads about the issues.  If you go to the bottom of page 19 here, you will see that Garmin-Kevin is trying to get some attention focused on this issue for us.   Adding your info there is probably about all you can do, but clearly there is no promise that anything will actually be fixed. https://forums.garmin.com/apps-software/mobile-apps-web/f/garmin-connect-mobile-ios/288457/apple-health-activity-ring-does-not-fill-after-workout-is-completed-on-a-garmin-device-request-for-improvement-on-how-garmin-connect-writes-data-to-apple-healthkit-sdk#pifragment-1286=19

  • Yea I had the watch well before my iPhone. I only recently switched from android and thought I’d give Apple health a try. Looks like it’s a lost cause though unfortunately. We should all be able to work together!

  • I also looked into RunGap and HealthFit. Like you said they only sync activities and it isn’t even automatic, you have to manually do everything. I also don’t believe healthfit integrates with connect, unless you mean something else.

I am new to Garmin (~2 weeks). I like the watch and the functionality. Coming from an apple watch, you do lose functionality.  Not being able to close my rings makes me go back to the apple watch for workouts and daily use. Keeping the Garmin for special occasions, something I have done with Samsung and LG watches in the past.

I can live with shortcomings due to apple being apple (no reply to messages, i can reply via Siri on the Garmin; not being able to see my work calendar and even not having a password to keep prying eyes away).

Not being able to close my rings prevents me to compete in challenges with my friends and family members. Plus I lose the sense of accomplishment.

  • It really is a bit of a joke that a company like Garmin can't give its users a better experience and integration with their chosen mobile platform. Give the multitude of app from small developers that all manage to be able to read and write data to Apple using the iOS API's.
