Apple Health Activity Ring does not fill after workout is completed on a Garmin device (Request for improvement on how Garmin Connect writes data to Apple HealthKit SDK)

Hello, I use my Garmin Fenix 6 for all my workouts and my Apple Watch 7 for daily use. When completed a workout, Garmin Connect synchronizes with Apple Health. Apple Health sees the workout data but does not fill the activity ring. Could anyone provide a solution to this? I see its a common problem among Garmin - Apple users. Garmin, please take care of this!! Thank you!

  • So do I with my Apple Watch 7 and my forerunner 745! I’m doing that only when I run or ride my bicycle. I hope it will be fixed asap.

  • I think with so many views and responses to this thread, Garmin should make this one of the priorities to update... I really should only be a quick fix.

  • now that we’ve provided this information, now what? Do you have a timeframe you can provide?

  • would love to know the status of this Kevin. I just got my new watch finally and really would love the health integration fixed. Are the engineers even looking into it ?

    Thank you

  • We do now have this request escalated so more eyes are on it, including the Engineering team.  Things like this take time, so I do not expect a change on this in the near future.  But, if we can continue adding users to this feature request, that will hopefully be a good representation of what the users want in this integration

I will be sure to post any updates to this thread and have been keeping an eye on it, adding users who answer the necessary questions for us to reach out and add them as requesting users.

  • Thank you for the update.

  • , since you said you are using this thread as representative of what users want I’ll make it explicit.  From the comments, personal experience, and respecting that Garmin wants to drive usage/sales of their own devices, I’d put things in four priorities.

Top priority:  All workout data to be written correctly to AppleHealth Kit.  This includes the following:  activitytype (including transitions for multi-sport), as well as (if relevant) total distance, start date, enddate, duration, and totalEnergyBurned.  Then, inside of the activity we want all tracked data recorded at the appropriate rate (either every second, or as recorded based on settings).  This should include heart rate, steps, total walking+running distance, active energy (with start/stop time range), total cycling distance (with time range), ground contact time, etc.  Basically all the metrics that are measured and that HealthKit can consume should be written to the same level of detail as the .FIT file allows.   Obviously things like power on a bike isn’t supported; but if a metric is supported, and my Garmin device records it, I want it sent over in detail, not just summary.   Basically assuming HealthKit supports the metric, there should be no loss of fidelity between the .FIT file and the HealthKit data.  This solves for the case where someone wants to use a Garmin device (Edge, Forerunner, etc.) as a best in class fitness tracker in combination with ‘all day’ usage of an Apple Watch (which seems to be the most common scenario). We can do this today with third party software (paid), but shouldn't have to.

Second priority: All ‘all day’ data recorded by Garmin to be written to HealthKit.  This includes stuff like weight, which is already recorded, but with real time stamps or ranges (not at the end of the day).  So, weight gets time stamped.   Multiple measurements per day each get their own time stamp (along with body fat, etc.). Steps, stairs climbed, etc. should be recorded with their start and stop time stamps.  Ideally as tight at possible rather than set 15 minute intervals that are used for some today.  (If the watch measurements allow for it).  The reason it needs to be actual values instead of set 15 minute intervals is to allow the data prioritization mechanism to work without losing data.    This should include everything in both ecosystems including pulse, blood ox, steps, stairs, all weight related, respiration, etc.   This solves for people who want to wear a Garmin watch sometimes, and an apple device others.  There is no real way to do this today.
Third priority:  I make this third since it has the potential to decrease the need for Garmin Hardware so I respect you are less likely to do it.  This is the inverse of the second priority above.  Garmin should read values from HealthKit and include them in physio true up.   That includes weight, steps, heart rate, etc.  Basically treat HealthKit like another device and incorporate its values into Garmin’s FirstBeat algorithms.  (Which I believe still require a device so that might not impact sales).  This solves for people who want to wear an Apple Watch (or other HealthKit enabled device like an Oura ring or Whoop band) all day combined with Garmin devices to measure workouts, but still use Connect as their primary fitness software.  This is not currently possible with any software, third party or otherwise.
Fourth Priority:  Again, I realize this could impact Garmin sales:  Import HealthKit activities into Connect and allow for FirstBeat analyzation through physiotrue up the same way you would for an edge device vs. a Fenix, etc.  This allows your customers to use whatever device they want, when they want, and still get maximum benefit from your ecosystem.  This is what we really want, but most of us would settle for 1 or 2 above.    I’ve said it before and will keep saying it, if you combine phase three and four here and do the FirstBeat work on the back end (without hardware), I really do think you have a subscription service offering that a lot of us would pay for.   I want all the traditional Garmin metrics, but I want to wear whatever device I feel like wearing, and I’m willing to pay for that.  This is doable through third party software at the moment (paid), but it doesn’t get used in the FirstBeat calculations, and I’d much rather have Garmin handle it directly.
I’d be more than happy to provide additional detail (as would lots of folks here) so don’t let the development team starve for input.    I also get that it’s going to be months before anything changes, but I’m very excited to hear that at least the right folks are looking at it.  And Kevin, thank you again for being our advocate on this!  I've always appreciated Garmin support, and regardless of what comes of this at least we feel like we are being heard.

  • I use Apple Health for all health data, I use Qardio for my blood pressure and spo2, Garmin scale for weight, Apple Watch for ECG+ daily watch and sleep tracker, and my Forerunner 955 for running.

  • Since the last Connect update Steps data is not syncing with Apple Health - oddly other data such as heart rate and workouts is? Just me or is this widespread??
