Intensity score dropping

I got the Fenix 5 a few weeks ago and have enjoyed all the new features and stats in the Connect App. One I like is Intensify minutes.

im an avid cyclist and sometimes runner. My first week I clocked up 600+ minutes; my second week 500+. This week, despite riding the same intensity and duration, I’m struggling to get over 40.

am I missing something? Why the sudden plummet in Intensity score? I’m certainly doing the same HR zones and have actually increased overall power for my rides so why do I go from 150 to 20 in one week?

thoughts?
thanks in advance

Kevin

  • Are you using the wrist heart rate or a chest strap? The wrist heart rate can be a bit iffy. Read more here how you can improve the readings: https://support.garmin.com/en-GB/?faq=xQwjQjzUew4BF1GYcusE59

If you are using a chest strap then check the setting for the intensity minutes. Is the setting Automatic or HR Zones? HR Zones is probably the most consistent setting and gives you more control in how they are calculated.

  • Hey. Thanks for the reply. I’ve been using the Garmin HRM dual and now recently, the HRM Pro while I ride (or run). I don’t rely on wrist HR for accurate measurements during activities.

I cannot seem to find any location where I can select HR data being automatic or based on zones.

But oddly, when I logged in this morning and synced, my Monday and Tuesday rides have been recalculated from 21 and 19 to 128 and 115 respectively. So... problem solved? Not sure what happened but it’s fixed.

Thanks again for the prompt reply. I may be back it seems...

  • The setting is in the Device settings under Activity Tracking and Weekly Intensity Minutes. At least for my 945.

    Great that it works now!

  • Hi Kevin,

did you set your intensity minute definition based on heartrate zone? If so: this seems to be broken as of last week. I can't use it either. Plus the automatic one seems to be somewhat broken as well as it counts too much vigorous exercise for me and some other people. Hey, I'm at 505, and it's only Wednesday!

  • Hey.

You are very intense it seems! hahaha.

From exploring it more, I think the issue was that my new Garmin HRM Pro stores information and needs to sync with the Connect App to get all the data to be processed. My previous HRM (the Dual) did not need to be added as a new Device and did not sync with Connect - it just transmitted data real-time.

The Pro seems to differ in that it needs to be added as a new Device and it needs to be synced post-activity as it tracks and records more data elements than the usual Dual. So I just need to remember to open Garmin Connect post ride while my HRM is still on so it can sync properly.
