ATTN: iOS Users with issues after updating to iOS 13

I Am Having Issues with My Garmin Watch After Updating to iOS 13 on My iPhone

With the released of iOS 13, some changes in the way that your Garmin device communicates with your phone have changed.  Review the following symptoms which should solve your issue.

The Garmin Connect app displays the message "Bluetooth is turned off"

iOS 13 requires Bluetooth Sharing to be turned on for the Garmin Connect app.  Below are steps to enable this setting.

  1. From the iPhone, select Settings

  2. Scroll down and select Connect

  3. Toggle Bluetooth Sharing on

NOTE: For the best user experience with your Garmin device and your phone, the Location setting should be set to Always and all toggles should be set to on.

I Am No Longer Getting Smart Notifications on My Garmin Device

To correct this issue follow the steps below:

Check Bluetooth Settings

  1. From the iPhone, select Settings

  2. Select Bluetooth

  3. Under MY DEVICES select the i icon next to your Garmin device

  4. Toggle Share System Notifications to on

  3. Under "NOTIFICATION STYLE" select Messages

Update your phone to iOS 13.3.1

Why Do I Need to Keep Signing Into the Garmin Connect App on My Phone?

Garmin is aware of an issue where the Garmin Connect app requires you to sign in when you open the app on an Apple phone.  This can occur when:

  • The phone is rebooted
  • The battery on the phone runs out of charge
  • Some reports of the issue randomly occurring

Apple has released a software update for your phone that corrects this issue. To download and install  OS 13.3.1, refer to the following Apple instructions: Update your iPhone, IPad, or iPod Touch

  • Can confirm that. Having really big troubles to get the workouts synced. Takes minutes if working. Notifications are working properly. Hopefully a fix is just around the corner.

  • After upgrading my phone to the 11 pro max I'm unable to setup my watch (Marq Athlete). It just hangs on "Setup complete!" screen and the watch displays the connect icon with the spinner around next to the bezel. Is there seriously no fix for this??

  • Thanks for the support. There must be another issue with the compatibility and developers. I did all steps and now (iOs 13, Fenix 6) dont sync activities anymore... message of “sync failed, device connection error”. AND I am also having another issue which is that I can login to Mygarmin or Express on the computer because I dont get the verification code... all is entered correctly. The first one is something to send to the developers department and ask them to debug the app. The second one needs to be improved either improving the entering fields of the phone or giving an alternative channel to get the verification code.

  • I have a temporary workaround for the sync failures. Follow these steps:

    1. Ensure that your device can connect to your WiFi network by going to settings then WiFi.

    2. Turn off both your phone and device.

    3. Turn of device only.

    4. Go back to settings and then WiFi and make sure it is attempting to sync via WiFi. Don’t turn your phone on yet.

    5. Once the sync has completed, then turn on your phone. Once it is on, go to Garmin Connect and your run/activity/cycle will show there.

To sync more activities, you will have to follow the above process. This obviously assumes your device supports WiFi sync, which many do.

  • I’m having the same issue with a Fenix 6. It worked fine for a couple of weeks until the recent app update (14th October). Now I can’t sync activities or routes between the devices, but notifications work intermittently and HR and steps seems to sync fine. Really frustrating.

  • Thanks for this. I’ve been syncing via Garmin Express on my Mac - like going back to 2014!!! Hope they sort this soon.

  • I am using the same workaround.

But do we know already what is the source of this problem?

  • I'm in the same boat.  I want notifications on my watch, but having them flash on my iphone all of the time is a real issue!

I’ve done all these steps and it’s still not working.

  • One way around for iphone 13.x is to try couple of things: check all Bluetooth and notification options are ON (in settings). Then, turn off both devices. Then first start phone, then watch. After few times of doing it, it syncs activities. Another way is to try syncing the phone on wifi (keep the phone off). However, some people (like me) will get the 0300 ERROR. And another new issue is that Weather would show on the phone now. But I am sure Garmin is working to get us there. I was with them on the phone and unfortunately people from the call center dont know how to get around the issue. We might need to wait for a software update without the bugs.
