Audio prompts

I've got a FR 645 (non-music) and used to use Jaybird brand earbuds to listen to music from my phone when running. I would get the lap announcements through the earbuds. I've now switched to Jabra brand earbuds and changed nothing else, but don't get the audio prompts. I checked in Connect mobile app and audio prompts are still set to on. So, has anyone had this or similar experience and is there a work-around/fix?
  • It may be something with the latest version of GCM on iOS. I had audio prompts working until the last week. The latest version seem to turn them off and lose my alarm. I have recreated both but no joy on this morning's run. Just checked and the prompts were off again so have re-established them and will see on the next run.

I tried a test. I went back to the Jaybird X4 earbuds and went for a walk with the auto lap set at 0.25 miles. I heard the audio prompt through the earbuds. Then without earbuds, I heard the audio prompt through my phone's speaker. Then I switched to the Jabra Elite Active 65t earbuds. I heard the audio prompt through the Jabras this time. I don't know if it is an activity specific issue or a headset issue, or a resolved issue. I'll attempt to test it while running, but the fully charged Jaybirds shut themselves off and won't turn back on after a short period of time (<10 minutes). They don't turn back on until I plug them in briefly. Hence the switch to Jabra.

So, in testing both the Jaybirds and the Jabras during a short run, audio prompts worked fine for both. I'm not sure what the issue was, but it seems to be resolved.
  • I am encountering the same issue. The audio prompts still work fine. But the iOS connect app keeps turning it off. Every time I turn it on, iOS will turn it off soon later. I have to remember to turn it on before my runs/activities every time, so it will work. Very annoying! Garmin, Please fix it. Thanks!
  • Yes - I have the same issue. I think it is perhaps an iOS release gone wrong. Having to reenable audio prompts before each run. Hope they fix it.
  • Not sure whether GCMSupport reads these posts without them being actively tagged but there does appear to be a reproducible problem with respect to the audio prompts setting reverting to Off whenever the device syncs. This is occurring on iOS GCM version 4.16.0.17

Didn't work again on a run this morning. The setting in Connect Mobile has not changed from On to Off at any point for me. I realized sometime after the run that I had the physical ringer switch on my iPhone set to off/mute, so I don't know if that was the issue. I'll make sure that the switch is on before my run tomorrow morning and see what happens.

I have a working theory on this now. This morning, before opening Connect Mobile, I started a walk activity and hit the lap button a few times while listening to a podcast. I did not hear the audio prompts. Then I ended and discarded the activity, opened Connect Mobile, found my way to the Audio Prompts setting and saw that it was set to "On", and backed out to the home screen of the app. Then I started another walk activity and hit the lap button a few times. This time I did hear the audio prompts.

My working theory is that there is a setting for it on the watch and a setting for it in the app and they are not both set to the same thing. I had a similar issue with a VA3 a while ago where a setting kept getting overwritten until I realized that I had to manually set it to be the same on both the watch and in the app. Then it would stay how I wanted it (I don't remember what the specific feature was).

This issue with my 645 coincides with both my purchase of Jabra earbuds and the last update to the app. I'm fairly confident that it is not an earbud issue and that it is an app/firmware issue. The problem is, I can't find a setting to update on my watch in order to get it the same in both places. As far as I can tell, if I want the audio prompts, I'm going to have to confirm the setting in the app before every run.

Does anyone have any other theories or solutions (other than Garmin fixing it, because that probably is least likely)?

I am having the exact same issue in the latest version of the IOS app with an F5 its really pi$$ing me off - even if i enable it during a run it works for a few laps and then switches off again.
  • I have the same issue , i use GCM on my Iphone 6 and i have fenix 5X . the audio prompts turn off each time i leave the app . it was OK up to 10 days ago. i will be happy if GCMSupport will be able to answer this issue.
