Background Battery Drain - iPhone Garmin Connect App

i have searched the forums and never found the answer, so i finally decided after witnessing this problem again and again, i'd post here:

in short, in both iOS9 and iOS10, the Garmin Connect App in iOS drains my iPhone's battery even if background refresh is turned off. the only way i can stop the draining is to remember to force quit (using the task manager) the app after using it to sync activities/etc. with my watch.

is there any setting/fix for this problem? if i look in the Battery Setting on my phone, i can see hours of background usage by the Connect App.

thanks for any thoughts/suggestions.

Since the last vivoactive firmware update (5.00), GCM no longer sucks my phone battery dry. Maybe the thing that fixed it was one of the more major items on the release notes: "Fixed issue where weather may request too frequently." At any rate. I'm happy the app behaves properly now!

I see the same issue with GCM draining my iPhone battery at an extremely quick rate. It is at its worse when using my Garmin edge 520 and slightly less although still very fast when using my new Fenix 5 plus. I am sure something has changed with an update as I have owned the Edge 520 for a couple of years and the issues only started a few months back. At first I didn’t link the two together until I got my Fenix 5 plus and it started draining the battery at an accelerated rate also.
Seriously considering returning the Fenix 5 and getting a Suunto 9 as I can’t live with my phone having the battery drained in 6 hours vs the 18 hours I get when the watch is not connected and I never had this sort of issue with my Sunnto Ambit.

Sorry, I do not understand ?
  • Hi,

I know they're an already a couple of threads with this problem but they are mainly based on older iOS and App versions.

Since updating my 12 Pro Max to iOS 16.4 I have a major background battery drain from the connect app. Which basically forced me to manually close the connect app after every opening.

I can't rule out if its related to the iOS update or due to an update of the app.

I recently had my battery replaced in the Apple Store so it's definitely not due to some weak battery. The app managed to drain 50% of a brand new battery in just a couple of hours overnight. So there wasn't any activity started on the app which could get stuck syncing. And unfortunately this is not a one-time event.

    Anyone else experiencing similar issues?

  • I’m facing the same issue. The Connect app runs and drains battery in background for many hours a day. Two days ago it peaked at 55% of battery draining during background activities.

I denied Bluetooth permissions, I sync my Fenix over Wi-Fi too, in an attempt to see if that improves the situation

  • Please install the latest Garmin Connect app version 4.66.0.24, just released today. If you continue to have this issue on the new version, do we have permission to contact you via email? What Country are you located in?

  • updated the app now. I’ll keep an eye on battery levels. Sure thing, you can contact me. I’m based in Italy.
