Background Battery Drain - iPhone Garmin Connect App

i have searched the forums and never found the answer, so i finally decided after witnessing this problem again and again, i'd post here:

in short, in both iOS9 and iOS10, the Garmin Connect App in iOS drains my iPhone's battery even if background refresh is turned off. the only way i can stop the draining is to remember to force quit (using the task manager) the app after using it to sync activities/etc. with my watch.

is there any setting/fix for this problem? if i look in the Battery Setting on my phone, i can see hours of background usage by the Connect App.

thanks for any thoughts/suggestions.
  • Maybe deleting/re-installing the app would help?

I have background refresh on for GCM. My battery stats for the last 7 days are 34 min on screen, 12.1 hrs background. That equates to 2% of my battery over the last seven days.

Running iOS 10.0.2 and GCM 3.10.0.11

i'm running the same versions of iOS and GCM too... and that included a reinstall of GCM when i got my iPhone 7 which i set up as new. but i may give that a shot anyway.

i wonder if there is a bug and maybe i should just use background refresh on and see what it does. because with it off, i'll will see the numbers you are talking about in one day (i.e., 12 hours of time passes and there will be 12 hours of background use in a 24 hour period!)

I have the same problem with battery drain.

    iPhone 5S
    FR 235 watch
    iOS 10.0.2
    Garmin Connect version 3.11.0.25

During the last 6 hours the Connect app have used 39% of the battery. (Settings -> Battery).

I am trying to disable the background update-thing now to see if that helps.

    following up...

it appears that turning on/off the background refresh setting in General -> Background App Refresh does nothing to affect the battery drain i've observed on my phone. the only way to stop the background refresh is to "force quit" the app using the task manager. the workaround works, but it would be nice to not have to do this.

Don't you stop getting push notifications on your watch from your phone when you close the app?

I tried force quitting the app yesterday just because I read this post and then stopped getting notifications from my phone to my watch until I restarted the app and rebooted my watch.

i actually turn off all notifications except for incoming calls. i'm an atypical user who doesn't to be notified every time a get a text.

that being said, i do get a notifications update (number shown on my ConnectIQ watch face), so i am guessing that things are still being pushed to my phone via bluetooth. (i.e., it seems independent of the app)

I too have the issue with battery drain. My iphone shows that Connect is regularly using around 70% of my battery power. Can I disable Connect except while I'm using the Garmin without deleting it altogether? Even that could be a pain as I'd have to remember to turn it on each time I go out for a ride.
The only solution I can see is to switch the phone to low power mode except when actually out on the bike.
  • Just close it down if it's causing a problem. Although trying to find out why it's using ~70% of your battery capacity might be a better long-term solution.

After recently updating to the latest version of iOS (11.3) I have started to have this same issue. Battery drain according to phone statistics is 70% from Garmin Connect. I always use the task manager to shut down apps when not in use. I have shut down everything I can think of (Cellular Data-off, Background App Refresh - off, Notifications- off, Calendars- off, Location- never). Also tried deleting app and reinstalling with same results. The only way I can get the app not to drain battery is to delete the app. Need some smart folks from garmin to chime in on this one.
  • i am having the same issue. my battery kept draining yesterday afternoon/evening. Battery usage shows Garmin Connect used 58% in the last 24hrs. it was paired with my Fenix 3 most of the day and my Edge 820 for about a 1 hour ride. turning off bluetooth on my Fenix 3 stopped the drain.

not sure if this is relevant... but in the iphone console, every 7s there are several of these to garmin connect:
