Background Battery Drain - iPhone Garmin Connect App

i have searched the forums and never found the answer, so i finally decided after witnessing this problem again and again, i'd post here:

in short, in both iOS9 and iOS10, the Garmin Connect App in iOS drains my iPhone's battery even if background refresh is turned off. the only way i can stop the draining is to remember to force quit (using the task manager) the app after using it to sync activities/etc. with my watch.

is there any setting/fix for this problem? if i look in the Battery Setting on my phone, i can see hours of background usage by the Connect App.

thanks for any thoughts/suggestions.
  • I'm also encountering similar battery drain in the background. This is on iPhone 12 pro iOS 16.4.1 (a), Fenix 7ss and Garmin Connect 4.66.1.3
Can be contacted via email, Finland.

  • I’m facing the same issue. This is on iPhone 11 iOS 16.4.1 (a), Fenix 7ss and Garmin Connect 4.66.1.3
Only disable Bluetooth help me. Disable background activities dosen't help.
Can be contacted via email, Switzerland.

  • For me it seems that the battery drain was fixed by updating the watch software Beta Version 13.15 to 13.16.

  • remember how it was my phone problem and there is no such thing as app bugs? Joy

  • Also having this problem on iPhone 13 Pro with Forerunner 955 Solar, app is 4.66.1.

  • I have had the same issue on iOS since January.  Prior to that the Connect app had been working fine for a couple of years.  I spoke to Garmin customer support today and sent them a diagnostic from the Connect app.  They said that this is a known issue and that Garmin is currently working on a solution to the problem.  I would still ask anyone else with this problem to call customer support and add their case to ensure the issue receives proper attention.

  • Hi Yes I have the same issue  - I reset the phone completely and now I have resorted to removing the app as the phone was draining in 4-6 hours and the phone was burning hot  - so hot It blocked charging !!

Tried Low power mode no difference - App closed no difference  - latest version of all software/firmware - no difference  AAGH

I phone 12 pro with a Venu 2 PLUS... (also use an Edge 1040plus)

Now resorting to wired connection or Wifi sync

  • I chatted with Garmin Support just now. Here is what they recommended:

    Location: When Using

    Backgroupnd App Refresh: Off

Force close app when not using

  • Its 2023 and the issue still hasn't been resolved, despite being reported to Garmin multiple times.  They clearly couldn't care less, and seem to be severely lacking in their ability to program apps.

  • after the recent update 4 days ago, when my garmin edge 520 connects to my iphone 6s when cycling it eats Up my battery. In about half an hour its dead.
