Since iOS 9.3.5 Connect-Mobile needs to be running in the background to get notifications on the VAHR. And to get mail notifications, these need to be configured for iPhone Notification Center.

Mmh ... Gmail ... I vaguely remember, that I read somewhere about issues with Gmail, but can't remember, what it exactly was. I have a different mail provider, so I don't know, if that's the reason, why it works for me.
