Could you possibly clarify. How do you know the App is running in the background? Miine worked for about 4hrs and now no SMS no phone or anything but I am getting weird Instagram ones from over a week ago and one that isn't even mine.....

If you double tap the iPhone's home button, iOS's task manager shows you all running apps. If you move an app to the upper display edge here, it gets closed.
As it seems Connect needs to be running and have access to the iPhone's GPS too for notifications to the VAHR to work ... at least since iOS 9.3.5
Furthermore the iOS notification settings play a role ... what is set to show up in Notification Center is allowed to be sent to the VAHR too. And make sure, that the VAHR's non-activity notification profile has the desired notifications activated.

Mmh ... Gmail ... I vaguely remember, that I read somewhere about issues with Gmail, but can't remember, what it exactly was. I have a different mail provider, so I don't know, if that's the reason, why it works for me.
