Intensity minutes

Exactly what is included in intensity minutes? I did a 35min swim at high intensity and it doesn't reflect yet I walked for 40min the next day at an average pace and it is showing in my intensity minutes
  • To make intensity minutes interesting you need to have a device you wear all day since intensity minutes is calculated for everything you do. Not just for the activities. That is why you don't need the intensity minutes function on the Edge devices. You will get the intensity minutes calculated by the device you wear all day.

I guess that most people that use Edge bike computers don't really need to care about how many intensity minutes they get. They already exercise way more than needed to live a healthy life. They probably measure their health in distance, time, FTP, VO2 max etc. Not a gimmicky feature like the intensity minutes.

  • Hmmmm. I remain unconvinced. I wear a Fenix 6 all but 8 minutes a day unless I’m shooting. Intensity minutes only register when I start an event or with move IQ unreliably ( sometimes doubling up). This is why things are so frustrating. They just don’t seem to live up to the theory. Bear in mind I have had a Fenix 5 and now 6 and been wearing and using and researching them for 5 years now.

I am not sure what theory you mean, but if you mean the one in the document How Does the Intensity Minutes Feature Work on My Garmin Watch?, then it tells the following

    • "In order to earn intensity minutes credit, you must reach or exceed 10 consecutive minutes where your heart rate is elevated above the threshold that is considered moderate intensity. Performing a more vigorous activity resulting in a high heart rate can double your credit minutes, allowing you to meet your weekly goal faster."

And it does not matter whether you start an activity (or whether it is started  by MoveIQ), or not. The IM are calculated independently. When you see the doubling, it is more likely due to the high HR, and not because of MoveIQ. Well, I do not own Fenix 6, but both on my Instinct and on Instinct 2 it works exactly in the way described in the documentation.

  • I've seen several reports about that Move IQ also counts intensity minutes at the same time as you get them from the activity so there seems to be a bug there.

I would turn off Move IQ. It is known to cause issues and there is no real value in Move IQ.

  • Perhaps you’re just lucky. I’ve climbed one of the 7 summits in a day and got nothing for it even whilst recording a hike. It’s a mystery.
Looks a lot like the fenix range doesn’t perform as well as some of the others. I choose to worry about other things now.

Please share a link to the activity, and the value of your Average Resting Heart Rate for that date (you can find it in the section Reports in Garmin Connect Web). One of possible reasons for not having the IM accounted for, is an elevated Resting HR (for example when you do not wear the watch, or do not activate the HRM, during the sleep, or during resting periods).
