Health app not syncing correctly

Former Member

Hi All,
I'm having an issue with the health app and my steps taken in Garmin connect. An example is the health showed 14k steps, in contrast to my Fenix 3 which displayed 18k steps. Is there a way to have the health app reflect the steps from the Garmin?

  • I got this reply back from Garmin Support. Does anybody use any app successfully that can read the weight data from the Health app?

    ================
Thank you for contacting Garmin International. Unfortunately, Apple Health sends no information to GCM. The sync only takes place one way, from GCM to Health.

What is meant by Health not supporting weight and sleep, is that this information does not currently transfer from GCM to Health.

You can enter weight manually into GCM by navigating to the weight Snapshot and touching on 'Add Weight'.

Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
  • For me (Fenix 3 HR) the workouts sync, but the calories burned are somehow divided by 100. So if I burned 300 calories during a workout, Apple Health will show I burned 0,3 calories. MyFitnessPal shows the correct number of calories, though.

Same for me, but 300/0.3=1000 of course (not 100).
This is problem with kcal (kilo calories) unit.

    Major Issues With Health Syncing

I bought a Garmin watch because unlike FitBit they clearly supported syncing to Apple Health and I need the data so that I can have data from various sources including scales, blood pressure monitors, etc.

The Apple Health sync is appalling. I have experienced phantom data, data loss, data duplication, inability to sync historic data, etc.

Imagine my frustration at having to wear my 20 GBP MiFit band next to my 500 GBP Garmin watch so that I can continue to maintain a value of reliable health data.

My Garmin replaced my Basis Peak, I have owned many other wearables but the lack of support, the poor mobile software truly stand out on the Garmin Platform.

I am definite that it is the Garmin by the way. I even went as far as to backup my iPhone and reset it to a factory state and only install Garmin Connect and it still has exactly the same issues, so if it will not work with a vanilla install and an empty vault then...

Perhaps they can hire some of the engineer from Mi / Basis / Sync Solver / Yunmai / etc - they seem to know how to code reliably against Health!

I can echo your frustration. Garmin's lack of dealing with Apple Health integration problems is obviously a high level decision that leaves a lot to be considered.

And so there is nothing we can do about it? No setting change anywhere that would correct this?

Are there any 3rd party apps that address these gaps?

I currently have a Fitbit and an Apple Watch - while Syncsolver works to some degree, it doesn't allow for some key features and functionality (Fitbit's restrictions).
Upon hearing Garmin "supported" HealthKit - I was really hoping for a fully baked solution that would allow me to swap between a Garmin tracker and my Apple Watch while maintaining consistency and accuracy of my fitness data.

Does anyone support this approach? Or is it simply a pipe-dream?
  • Health app not syncing correctly

yes me too. I've found :

    - sleep, heart rate and steps sync once a day around midnight
    - calories - resting and active, distance seem to update during the day but then at midnight completely disappear to never return ....
    - weight doesn't read

Apologies for replying to this old thread, but I just bought a Fenix 3 and wanted to provide some additional information.

What I'm seeing with Flights Climbed, Calories (active and resting), and Distance is that in those cases there's always one single Connect entry with a 24-hour timeframe in Healthkit that Garmin Connect constantly updates during the day. So, instead of writing small chunks of data to Healthkit as they become available in Connect, like:
    • 300m walking from 9-10AM
    • 250m walking from 10-11AM
    • 2000m walking from 1-2PM

Garmin Connect instead just constantly overwrites that single Healthkit entry with the new global value as the day progresses. So for Calories, Flights Climbed, and Distance you will always see 1 entry with a start time of 00:00:00 and end time of 23:59:59.

The correct way to communicate to Healthkit though is to send over smaller chunks of data. Funny enough Connect actually does this correctly for Workout Session data and Steps (once it syncs all step data for the current day right before midnight). So Garmin Connect has definitely not implemented this correctly for all available data types.

Besides that issue, as mentioned above, Steps are indeed only updated once per day (around midnight). So you can't see your step progression in Healthkit during the day. You can only see the correct total the day after, once Garmin has synced everything to Healthkit. In the case of Step data though, Connect does write the invididual chunks of information to Healthkit (you can check that by going to Steps in Healthkit and looking at 'Show All Data').

So the current issues can be summarised as:
    • Calories, Distance, Flights Climbed are written (and constantly overwritten) to Healhkit as one single 24-hour entry and all information except for the current day is deleted around midnight
    • Steps are written as individual chunks of data, but they only sync to Healthkit once near midnight (so you can't actively track step information during the day in Healthkit)
    • Connect asks for permission to read weight data, but in fact doesn't read it at all (so why ask for permission from Healthkit in the first place then?)

    Very frustrating indeed :/
  • Health Integration Bugs

    Hi all,

This is nuts. The integration is really, really bad and buggy. Yesterday was the worst: I think I encountered a bug that made Garmin Connect sync everything in realtime to Health. It was awesome - everytime I opened Health, all data from my Fenix 3 HR would be there.

Except today... it isn't! It's so frustrating. As a software engineer, HealthKit is crazy simple to use. I'm appalled that Garmin can't get their sh*t together - especially after paying 400+ for a fitness watch.

Would like to get a response from @GCMSupport.

The response from Garmin to me is that its Apples fault.

"In regards to the calories as they are showing correctly in the Garmin Connect App this is something that you would need to contact Apple about as the correct data is being synced from us but by Apple Health Kit the data is showing up incorrectly."

I am not a software engineer but I've looked at the Healthkit API documentation and it seems like Garmin write the data as opposed to Apple syncing it from Garmin.

I have more or less said the same back to Garmin in my email response back to them. I have also provided them examples from other apps where it is working correctly.

I am not holding my breath regarding them acknowledging let alone fixing the problem …

On a positive note the did acknowledge that Heartrate data is missing:

The issue you are referring to in regard to HR is something that we are aware of and are working hard towards a resolution, however, we do not have a timeframe for this to be completed as yet.

Yesterday was my very first day using the vivosmart HR with GC on iOS. It was syncing perfectly and smoothy in realtime, like you said days ago. Today it's syncing nothing at all. So weird. It suddenly stopped working at 10pm.

I suppose we can only hope for an app update fixing this mess.
