Can Garmin app count steps on its own?

My Garmin watch doesn't count steps when I push a pram - in fact it sends me a "time to get active" notificarion while I push a 40kg pram + 2 kids on it up the hill!

I am extremely happy with all other Garmin features but I really want to be able to count steps and pushing the pram with 1 hand or tapping my hand wouldn't work for me.

I used a Samsung watch and phone in the past and I could still count my steps because when the app is synched to the phone it shows data from either of the devices (phone or watch) OR a total step count from watch and phone together. And they don-t overlap, i.e. if the steps are counted on your watch, they won't show on your phones' total and vice versa - I have tested it.

To my understanding Garmin app doesn't allow this - can we hope it could happen in the future? I am sure many moms would be extremely grateful as pram walks are the way to go when you are on mat leave and recovering from birth.

Thank you.

The watch relies on the accelerometer to determine whether or not steps are recorded. I have very good results from placing the watch in my hip pocket when doing things like pushing a lawnmower. There is enough movement there to record steps. If it's during a recorded activity, you could wear it on your ankle, so you would also get heart rate data. Or use an external HRM strap.
