Set a new personal record but time was incorrect

I set a new personal record for the half marathon distance at the weekend.  The distance I ran was recorded as 13.23 mi which was slightly over the 13.1 mi distance for a half marathon.  The total time was 2:07:47 which was about 10 minutes faster than my previous record.

However when I went to accept the new personal record I saw it had recorded the half marathon time as 2:07:47 - the exact same time as the total run length.  After checking my run on Strava where I sync it to they had recorded the 1/2M time as 2:06:27.

I know that previously Garmin has computed a record for a distance shorter than the total run so I'm wondering if this is a new bug or there is some reason it didn't do it right this time?

And yes I'm aware I can go in an just edit the amount but the thing is I don't want to have to rely on a 3rd party to do this and edit values from Garmin, I want Garmin to get it right first time.

I'm guessing this is a Garmin Connect issue and not related to my specific watch type - a Forerunner 255.

  • That's how it works. If the activity distance is only slightly longer than the PR distance, then the activity distance is considered correct. Races are usually officially metered, and the distance of the race takes priority over the watch. When the activity distance is much longer, then the fastest section of the activity is used.

You can trim and reassign the PR, or you can edit the time of the PR.

  • Oh... good to know, I had no idea.  Is that documented somewhere or have people just figured it out?  I usually run a bit further for my training runs to make sure it is registered as the complete distance in both Garmin and Strava (who do some kind of additional GPS interpolation/smoothing so sometimes show slightly shorter distances). I think previously I must have always run just far enough beyond the standard distance for Garmin to do the fastest section thing.

I've edited the time in the PR as you suggested.  Thanks for the response.
