Pairing and connecting issues: Fenix 5 plus

 Hello Everyone,

Pairing issues anyone?

Phone: oneplus 11

 (os Android 14)

 Bt version: 14.0.0

Watch: fenix 5 plus (version 19.30) Garmin connect versions: 5.5, 5.2, 5.1, 4.7.1

I have done the basics steps from the garmin support for fenix 5 plus: unpairing, removing device, removing app, restarting both phone and watch.

Then:

- soft reset the watch

- full factory reset the watch

- remove connect app and installed older versions and tested.

- deleted cache and data of connect app

 - found a way to delete cache and data for Bluetooth app (FV file Explorer >apps>filter all>found BT app >long press>app info.)

 - reset all connection from phone (system update >back up and reset>reset phone >reset network and Bluetooth settings)

- install connect on another phone and tried to pair (it fail too).

- cycled the buttons to pair (first the watch then the phone.

Later on, first the phone then the watch, turn BT off and tried to pair this to allow the app to ask me to turn it on, turned off/on BT during pairing) Nothing seems to work. What I am noticing is that during pairing the sync between both devices seems off, I mean if the watch shows the 6 digit pin to pair, the phone doesn't show the prompt to type it until a delay, leaving not enough time to complete the procedure and failing due to a wrong pin.

Another times it accepts the Pin, but it creates another delay causing a failure (wrong pin).

  1. At this point I am unsure what caused the issue initially, and what is causing it now. There were no recent Android updates, or garmin updates, only the most recent garmin app version 5.5 which could be the culprit. If anyone has more ideas or solutions, please advise and let me know. Thanks!
  • I paired already plenty of Garmin watches with Garmin Connect, but I was never asked to enter any pin. Are you you really pairing the watch from the app, and not from the Bluetooth menu of the phone?

Also, when pairing, make sure there is no other device around, that you already tried to pair with the watch (like the other phone, or a tablet). And in case of such problems, I would turn the BT off on all other devices in the proximity. You could also try turning off the Wi-Fi, and using just the mobile data, while pairing - Wi-Fi and BT use the same 2.4 GHz band, and the interference may play a role.

And since Fenix 5 is a quite old model, I assume you've bought it second hand. If it is really the case, it is possible it is damaged, locked, or it could be a testing prototype that can't be paired in this way. First of all, I would call the Support and have them check the S/N.

  • Thanks for the help! Answering your response I think Android has that feature of the pairing pin. I am using the app, via BT settings won't work.

I have no other devices around that might interfere with the procedure.

I will be trying what you mentioned having the wifi off, to see if it works or not.

Finally, yes it is a second watch, I bought a year+ ago, it worked the first time I paired it and it worked, it has been working since. I had no issues before with this watch.

I opened a support case with Garmin about the issue, they asked for the S/N, maybe I find out more about this watch.

For now, I still believe there was something wrong in the latest connect app update for Android (v. 5.5). It worked until I install it.

    Thank again for the help.

    Regards,

In that case, remove the watch from Garmin Connect (probably not there), and from the list of BT Android settings (!!!), uninstall the app, install an older version from apkmirror.com, and disable its auto-updates in Google Play store.

  • Hello Trux,

Nothing still having the issues. There is no way to sync the phone and watch via BT.

Update version 5.5.1 came out, it didn't solve anything.

My ticket opened with Garmin is going slow, they take some time to reply. Latest request was my software, GPS and ANT/BT software versions. Already sent the reply.

It seems no one else is having the same issue, or want to join the forum, or both RoflRoflRofl

Thanks for the help and suggestions.

And did you try installing an older version as I suggested?

  • Oh I've done it with multiple versions. Same issues.

    5.3, 5.2, 4.7.1.. Same results.

Thanks for the help! I'll wait for garmin's support follow up.

    Good weekend.

In that case, I would tell the problem comes from some settings on the phone. Check out diverse battery optimizing settings, permissions, you can try resetting the network, or temporarily disabling the Wi-Fi and using mobile data instead, etc.
