Epix Pro 51mm keeps getting disconnected from the phone. Fed up with the issue.

I bought a new Epix Pro 51mm Sapphire edition from Garmin, set it up, but it keeps losing connection to my phone. I've tried everything: whitelisting the Garmin Connect app, turning off battery saver in the phone and for this particular app, keeping Bluetooth on constantly, allowing the app to run in the background, and ensuring both the app and my phone are updated. Still, the watch disconnects. It stays connected for a bit, but then I notice the weather isn't updating, and the watch disconnects from the phone. I keep seeing the "waiting for phone" message. The watch will Sync and the app will update itself only when I open the app on the phone and click on sync. Deleted and reinstalled the connect app. Phone is an android.

  • Check if the Connect app really is running.

"Go to Settings > System > Developer Options. If you don't see Developer Options, scroll down and select About phone, then look for Build number and tap it seven times. Tap Running Services. It shows the apps currently running on your Android, how much RAM they're consuming, and how long each has been running."

If you enabled Developer options you can just search the settings for "Running services" to find it. On my phone Connect got 1 process and 3 services running.

  • Yes, its running non stop and the app is consuming battery too!
It needs to be running constantly and in the background for the watch to stay connected to the phone via bluetooth. The moment I accidently close the app, the connection is broken.
THIS is not how I expected Garmin watches to behave. My previous tracker, a Mi Band, stays connected to the phone as long as the bluetooth is on in the phone, irrespective of whether its companion app is open or not. It will sync when the app opens up but it stays connected for getting notifications/call alerts, etc.

Garmin watch directly disconnects from the phone!

  • Garmin watch directly disconnects from the phone!

Yes, that's how it works. Other brands may use apps with a hidden background service that remains running in the background, even if you close the main app. It consumes battery too. The only difference is that the User Interface (which does not consume any significant energy) can be closed, at the other brand, but from the point of view of the battery consumption there would be no noticeable difference.
