Garmin connect causing bluetooth issues on samsung phone

Since the latest update on my forerunner 255, garmin connect doesn't synchronise well with my phone. It can be paired, but the last step: synchronisation doesn't work. Most of the times it only synchronises once after starting up my phone, then the connection is lost. Workouts won't upload anymore and I cannot see live data from my forerunner, the synchronisation keeps hanging. Aside from that, other bluetooth devices (for instance in-ears, or laptop, sound device ...) also cannot couple to my phone when garmin connect is installed, even if they are already paired. The devices cannot find my phone's bluetooth. Had contact with garmin but they keep sending me random links to try standard issues, nothing helped. When garmin connect is removed, all bluetooth devices work fine.

  • Well, that's what Samsung proposed to me. And their answer was that the problem is the garmin connect app. Why would that be a phone problem as it works in safe modus?

  • Why would that be a phone problem as it works in safe modus?

Just because of that. If a change on the phone can make it work (or oppositely), then it is clearly not depending on the watch, since you did not change anything on the watch, or did you?

  • no indeed, so a reset of my phone could perhaps be the solution? As there might be some settings changed that causes the issue? In safe modus, my phone uses some kind of standard settings? Or what might be the thing that makes it work in safe modus?

  • Sorry, I do not know your phone. As I wrote, each manufacturer makes their own clone of Android, with options, optimizations, and features not available at other brands. The last time I had a Samsung phone, is some 5 years ago, and in that time it worked without hiccups with Garmin Connect.

All the tips and hints I know, are listed in the already mentioned Sync / Connection Troubleshooting Guide, so have a look at it - perhaps it can help, or give you some ideas where to look. There are also two tips specifically for Samsung phone owners.

You can also try googling for expressions like Samsung A41 bluetooth problems - Google Search - there are plenty of hits, so perhaps some of them can help you.

  • Ok, I Will dig further. Thanks for your help!

  • Did you have any luck solving the problem?  i'm having the same issue with my Samsung A41 and my Garmin 255. It continues to disconnect and then won't reconnect unless I restart my phone and watch.  It is also causing my Samsung EarBuds to keep disconnecting and the only way to reconnect is by force closing Bluetooth.  The problem has got so bad that I now only use my Garmin 255 when I exercise and then I turn it off, which totally defeats the purpose of buying an expensive watch.  It's obviously an issue with Garmin and not Samsung.

  • It's obviously an issue with Garmin and not Samsung.

What brought you to this conclusion? We do not see much complaints here from other than Samsung users, here on the forums. Myself, I used the app on three different Android phones, as well as on an iPhone, and did not experience any similar problems with any of them.

  • Unfortunately no. I kept pushing with Garmin, they gave me all kinds of possible reasons and possible solutions (even said that I was using android go lite, which is not). Now they give me the chance to send my forerunner to them to check by themselves. I really don't know what to do. I can connect it to garmin connect app on my Samsung tablet so that kinda is a workaround, but I got a sense that it's really phone related. So I might buy a new one, and I'm thinking about a wahoo rival elemnt watch as well

  • I have  reported the problem to Garmin, who are still investigating.

    Two workarounds I have found:

    - turning off location while syncing avoids the problem.

    - if the problem occurs, and bluetooth on the phone stops working, turning airplane mode on and off clears it. Slightly more convenient than restarting the phone.

  • Thanks for the update.  Sorry to hear no progress has been made.  After years of using a 910xt and having issues syncing via computer I thought I'd finally upgrade to be able to sync with my phone and now I'm having even more problems!
