Garmin connect blending data from Edge 1030 data & Forerunner 965. No heart rate data appears in Garmin connect from Edge 1030 bike ride

I have a Edge 1030 that i use for cycling. I just brought a Forerunner 965 for everything else. Yesterday i did a 3 hr ride and took the 965 off because i had the edge and heart rate strap. After completing the ride and uploading it and putting the 965 back on, i noticed that no Heart rate data filled in the gap from when i took the 965 off. Should the data from the Edge 1030 fill in the gaps when the 965 is not on? If it doesn't, then doesn't that make other stats such as average HR, max Hr, Body battery, Stress etc all become not valid due to me doing another stressful session. Can the edge data be blended into the 965 data and is so how?

The data from the strap, if connected only to the Edge, go to the activity stats only, not into the all-day stats. For that you have several options:

    1. Keep wearing the FR965
    2. Connect the strap simultaneously also to the FR965, start an activity on it, and discard it at the end (please note that in some configurations with devices not fully compatible with the Unified Training Status, the training load may get double counted). In this way you do not have to wear the watch, you can keep it in the backpack.
    3. Use the HRM-Pro strap and have it linked directly to Garmin Connect
  • Thanks for responding Trux. I really don't want to wear the FR965 while out riding. I was hoping the data from the edge would blend in with the FR965 when they were both sync and uploaded.

  • I'm finding the same thing with my Edge 840. This really seems like a bug. I hadn't noticed until Connect said my "intensity" was lower than previously when I've been riding a lot lately and working even more intensely than previously.

I hesitate to wear my watch for fear of conflicts over which one to use data from or even connect to.

  • I found this which talks about your Primary Training Device (PTD) and your primary wearable, which for me is an Instinct Solar (which does not support Unified Training Status). Why this isn't all computed on the backend is beyond me.

  • Though, I am confused. My Edge is my PTD and HR data is not used, it seems, as suggested. Only my primary wearable is pumping HR data to Connect:

  • There's a clear gap in the heart rate data shown when Connect knows I was riding (recording with my 840):

You can wear both simultaneously. Edge will record the activity, and Instinct the daily HR, Calories, and Intensity Minutes. Just the sampling rate and the HR accuracy of Instinct will be worse than from the strap, so I would rather suggest connecting the strap to Instinct too, and starting the activity on it too (discarding instead of saving at the end, to avoid the duplicate).

  • I'm already dual recording with Zwift. I hate to add yet another activity to the mix I have to manage. This just seems like a bug since my Edge is the PTD. My older Instinct is my Primary Wearable and can't be a PTD. I started a chat with support but will have to pick it up later.

Not a bug. It is designed to work exactly in this way, and it was always so. You can suggest a change to Garmin at Share Ideas | Garmin, but do not keep your hopes too high, and especially do not expect it changes anytime soon.

Instinct does not need to be the PTD. If you want the HR on the all-day graph then you have only two options - either simply wear the Instinct, or use HRM-Pro or HRM-Fit chest strap - those can be linked directly to the app, and would deliver the daily HR too. And you can use Instinct also without recording any activity. Just the accuracy will be lower, but you will have at least some data.

As for Zwift - there is in fact no need to import Zwift activities to Garmin Connect - the virtual map is useless for the stats. All you need is connecting the trainer sensors to your Edge, and recording the activity with it. The HR, power, and speed / cadence data is all what is needed for calculating all metrics. Keep Zwift data at Zwift.

  • My Edge is connected to Zwift already. I don't sync Zwift to Garmin as, yeah, it's not as good and doesn't count toward badges, which help keep me motivated - especially since I do a lot of outdoor activities as well. I just have to go into Strava later and delete the Garmin-recorded ride. Not looking to game either system.

My hope is that heart rate data - wherever it's recorded - is imported. I already use an older Garmin HR strap (so old I can't even remember the model) connected to the Edge, and the Edge is my PTD so, according to that article I linked, it seems it should be pumping HR data into Connect.

Even though it may have always been that way, I still think it's a bug - perhaps, moreso, a design bug. It's distinct heart rate data - even recorded by Garmin devices - and should fill in gaps. I appreciate it doesn't actually work that way, but it also doesn't seem to be working like that article implies it should. Hence my support chat.
