Do Garmin Calories Factor in TEF?

I use Cronometer to track calories consumed and it computes an estimate of calories burned based on the Thermic Effect of Food for the fat, carbs, and protein entered.

Assuming that TEF raises your heart rate and Garmin uses HR as one part of its equation to calculate either Active or Resting calories, is it correct to assume that TEF is already indirectly counted by Garmin?

Or are Garmin Resting and Active calories based solely on age, weight, etc., and steps?

  • Thanks for your reply. I had, of course, already done simple Googling before posting (!). The official description of the formula used doesn't mention whether the heart rate increases via TEF is covered in Garmin's numbers or not, nor where (if it is). So if I ate 100 calories of protein vs. 100 calories of fat, with all else held equal, will Garmin's numbers reflect that? Since Garmin doesn't know about the type of food consumed or that the former requires energy to digest while the latter does not, then only if an increased HR is present could it account for TEF. Does it? Does anyone know for sure?
