Why does my watch frequently unpair?

I have a Samsung phone(S20FE) with garmin connect and a Fenix 6X and it unpairs every few hours.  It is at least a 10 minute process to re-pair it and it's driving me mad.

I have searched for a solution, but the nearest thread I can find is from 5 years ago.

I wonder if an attempted hotfix for the bluetooth pairing cycle that is mentioned in another popular thread is causing it?  I have had that issue several times before, but usually after re-pairing several times it eventually works and stops the cycle.

The issue I have is that I notice that my watch isn't syncing and when I look in garmin connect it shows that the Fenix isn't paired however it IS registered to Garmin Connect.   Sometimes I just repair it, sometimes I completely remove it, and then reregister, but both have the same results.  It connects for a few hours.

Any Solutions?

  • Thanks, I have been through that before, will do so again now.

  • The only thing that I hadn't done on that guide before was reset network setting on phone as I hadn't wanted to reconnect to all wifis and bluetooth connections that I use.  I have howevwe now completed the guide including reset network connections wish I hadn't bothered as it still unpairs.  Now I recall I did occasionally have this issue with a previous Sony phone too.  At a loss.

Does it really unpair (asking you to pair the watch again), or just disconnects? Those are two different problems.

If it unpairs, then there is also the possibility the watch is associated with another device or account. You may need to dissaociate the watch from all accounts (removing it from there) of all apps (GC Mobile, GC Web, GC Express, GC Explore, ...), factory resetting the watch, and then re-assigning it back to your original GC account. Avoid pairing it to two devices concurrently. It can work too, but if you have troubles, it is better avoiding it till you localize the problem.

If it disconnects, and nothing from the troubleshooting guide helped, then I would recommend testing it with a different phone model of another brand (for example a borrowed one from a friend), just to see whether the problem comes from the phone or not. I recommend avoiding Huawei and derived brands, though - those are the ones with the most problems.

  • Thanks for taking the time to reply.

It is definitely unpairing.  It says in connect that it is registered but not paired with android device.

That is a good thought thanks.  I wonder if I paired it to my laptop?  I may have at some point.  Probably only via USB to update maps.  Weird that it would unpair even when not home and near laptop.  Will try what you suggest when home later.

  • You may be using two different accounts, too - a different one for Garmin Express over the USB, and another one for the GCM app. Make sure to remove the device from all of them, before you reset the watch and start connecting it again!

  • Did you find a solution? Changed my phone and this is driving me nuts too.

  • No solution found though it is an intermittent problem and I currently don't have it.  Typically I will have it for a few (very annoying) days and then it will just stay paired for a few weeks before it happens again.   One thing to note is that since the original post the pairing process in Connect has been streamlined so it is probably a minute or 2 rather than 10.   Still annoying.

I don't have the phone registered to any other devices so it is not that.

  • It started to unpair for me also on D2 Air as soon as I am away from my phone for a couple of minutes. Annoying as hell.

  • Brand new Samsung A32 and the same problem. With other phones my Forerunner 745 works normally.

  • I have the same problem with a fenix6-pro and a Samsung S10e. Garmin simply refuses to admit that they have serious software problems. Bluetooth is a standard communication protocol. I have 6 devices paired with my phone and Garmin is the only one that keeps unpairing. It it were the phone other devices should have problems as well.
